It is a ramdisk because if it wasn't one, you wouldn't be able to delete/change partitions on the disk. So you just need to delete recoveryHD from within recovery. Re: Deleting Mac OS X Recovery Partition Paragon has a bootable backup creator, and I believe it may be free. You can then boot that up, freeing the hard drive for any operations you give it. You could then use disk utility to delete recovery.
