Re: Is There a Way to Access Operating System Files for Voice Sense

If you can find those update files, that would be awesome and I'd be really happy. If it turns out to not be possible though, don't worry about it too much; I do have 1 potential option left if we can't find those files anymore.

Re: Is There a Way to Access Operating System Files for Voice Sense

Good to hear you made some progress. The sounds, at least when I explored the braille sense, were in /nand/sounds. But again, that was on the u2 model, I'm not sure how similar that is to the voice sense.I ran into the same problem you did with the Windows folder, so I extracted the update file, just as @10 suggested. Unfortunately, I looked around quickly to see if I could still find a download, but you're right, Hims seems to have stopped offering it. All the links result in 404 error pages.Essentially, from what I can remember, the update package contained two files, apps.bin and nk.bin. Apps, from what I could tell, was most of everything except the Windows folder, and nk.bin was everything else. If you want, I can look around and see if I have the full image I extracted a long, long time ago and I'll upload it somewhere for you.

I don't think I have the update file, and sadly I don't think Hims does either.

Re: Is There a Way to Access Operating System Files for Voice Sense

I wonder if there’s another way then? I know people have gotten the sounds out of there, and the sounds are in the windows folder which is protected. I guess someone who knows more about this sort of stuff would have to chime in here, but at this point it looks like I’m stuck.

Re: Is There a Way to Access Operating System Files for Voice Sense

@5yeah, same idea with Windows CE though.  But the path looked like a Linux filesystem mount.@7taking it apart to plug it into your computer probably wouldn't work at all unless you both get lucky and have an electronics expert on hand to do soldering.

Re: Is There a Way to Access Operating System Files for Voice Sense

Update 2: Man, I'll tell you what, Hims is really clever! First off, the Windows folder is protected, so while it allows you to copy 10 of the files in that folder to another device, it does not allow you to copy any of the main files in the folder. Secondly, there appears to be no way to change it to be unprotected from the Voice Sense itself, because it won't let me execute .exe files from the file manager. It tries to open them as if they're just regular folders. I also can't run command prompt (which actually is on the voice sense) because of the exe thing, and because you can't find it in the utilities menu. I guess I'm kind of stuck now, unless I was to take this thing apart with a screwdriver and find the internal memory and copy the data by plugging it into my computer somehow, and that's a very risky thing to do. Do you guys have any other ideas?

Re: Is There a Way to Access Operating System Files for Voice Sense

Yeah, this runs windows CE, and to my knowledge, there is no command prompt. I’ll see what I can do with it though.Update: appending ../ at the end of the address bar in file manager in the flash disk folder did the trick. I don’t think I can access these files when plugging the device in to USB, so I think I will have to copy them over to an SD card and proceed that way, but it definitely worked. Thanks for the help. I’ll come back to you guys if I’ve made any progress.

Re: Is There a Way to Access Operating System Files for Voice Sense

Camlorn, I'm pretty sure this thing is running windows CE. That, could be a hole other can of worms, unless they let you access the command prompt. Humanware actually did with the Apex, which is really cool, BTW.

Re: Is There a Way to Access Operating System Files for Voice Sense

No, you have to do that from a browser on the device itself if it works.  I don't even know what this thing is but the hack from @2 is you screwed up security hello world basically.  Presumably it's running some variant of Linux underneath and, if it is, you can often poke around by using valid/path/here/../../.. or whatever to fool things that would otherwise not let you into places to let you into places.

Re: Is There a Way to Access Operating System Files for Voice Sense

I think I might be doing something wrong. I went into this pc, pressed alt D, and pasted "/flashdisk/../" into the address bar without the quotes, and it just opened my web browser. Am I doing something wrong, or are the system files inaccessible from mas storage mode? I did also check disk management, and from what I saw there were 3 disks. One was the internal disk where files are stored, and I presume the other 2 were designated for the compact flash and SD card readers because I couldn't access them. None of these 3 disks had any partitions when I checked them, so I'm wondering if the Voice Sense hides that partition from being seen by the OS?

Re: Is There a Way to Access Operating System Files for Voice Sense

I can't ever actually say I've used a voiceSense, but I had a braille sense which I could access hidden system files on by typing  "/flashdisk/../" into the address bar, accessed by pressing tab from the drives list in file manager. This is the best I can remember, I haven't used mine in quite a while, but let me know if you make any progress.
