Re: Onslaught, audio Asteroids, early Linux/Windows beta

Hey folks,This took way longer than expected, a big reason for which was that I was gifted with a Mac Mini and iPad Mini. As such, I've since gotten test builds working on MacOS. I'm still uncertain on whether I can adapt to mobile--there are lots of controls, a controller or keyboard will be necessary, and performance is a bit bad on my cheap Android--but I've added MacOS and iOS checkboxes to the form.I'm going to (finally!) push out Linux builds hopefully tomorrow. Assuming those don't explode horribly, Windows, MacOS, and other platforms will follow shortly after. iOS, Android, Xbox, and other curated/store-driven platforms will take longer but are hopefully coming. If you've already filled out the form and would like to be considered for the MacOS/iOS tests, please shoot me an email via the link at the bottom of each message. No need to fill out the form again. If you haven't filled it out and would like consideration for the MacOS/iOS rounds, find the form here.

@23 got it exactly. All of the above are implemented features. Balancing is obviously necessary since I'm the only one who's played so far, but Asteroids is definitely not Space Invaders. Granted, it's still a simple game, and I'm not complicating it with special levels and such like I did with Torrent. Simple and casual is where it's at here.

Re: Onslaught, audio Asteroids, early Linux/Windows beta

Hi,So in Asteroids, you can actually thrust forward through the screen to avoid things. Also though, you need to be careful. Asteroids start out as big, but when you hit them, they split into two medium asteroids, and shooting those splits them into smaller asteroids. There's also sorcers that fly across the screen sometimes fairly fast. There's also a hyperspace button that literally warps you to a random position while making you invincible for a second or so, but the issue is, you could come out of hyperspace right into the path of an asteroid. If you're hit by any asteroid, I think, you end up losing a life.

Re: Onslaught, audio Asteroids, early Linux/Windows beta

They are half decent when you use the right presets. The device you use has to already be 7.1 capable - so this isn't a technology that tries to bring surround into normal speakers, but it works well enough. You have to attach the driver to each device you want it to work with, then use the other program to select a preset and configure things.

Re: Onslaught, audio Asteroids, early Linux/Windows beta

@10WinRT actually works, in theory.  I haven't tried it, but as far as I know everything it depends on supports it and I think the current build system works for it--possibly even the current binaries, actually.  Excepting miniaudio, there shouldn't be anything special there, at the end of the day it's just sticking to a subset of the Windows API, and Miniaudio claims support.  Obviously ARM is harder, but I've not used platform-specific intrinsics, so again, should only be minor tweaks.  That and me buying a Pi.  Point being it's more cross platform than it appears, I just don't have the space or the funds for Camlorn's mad science laboratory of wonders.4.0/5.1/7.1 panning are things I can do in theory, in the sense that I've done them before in Libaudioverse but need someone who actually has a proper setup.  I'll look into some sort of emulation in the immediate future but still have the no way to get a setup in this apartment and set up right problem, so...well.  But the math is simple and I could probably collaborate with you or someone else willing to tweak the coefficients, and the algorithm for it is actually fairly simple.I think your problem about audio only being in one side is actually lack of reverb.  If they have one that you can turn on, that may give you what you want.  Synthizer will have an at least passable reverb by mid to late August, because I did passable reverb for Libaudioverse, but there's nothing like 4 or so years since you did something plus an ongoing interest to let you learn stuff and figure out how to do it right, so I'm aiming for at least good out the gate, maybe excellent.  In general there was nothing quite like having Synthizer run almost as fast in debug mode as Libaudioverse did in release mode to make me realize how far I've come w.r.t. soft realtime dsp stuff.

Re: Onslaught, audio Asteroids, early Linux/Windows beta

@8/9: Sorry, maybe I was unclear. I meant that, if a sound is to your left, there is absolutely no sound on the right. I don't mean HRTF, I don't think. I mean that, when you hear a sound on your left IRL, there's still some sound heard in your right ear. With Godot's audio system, a sound on your left is exclusively heard on your left, making it a bit unrealistic. I'm not overly worried about this--it happens in some mainstream games, including the recent FF7 remaster--but it is a limitation I'd ideally like to see go away in time. There are two features I'd need before I grabbed Synthizer and ran with a Godot integration. 1. 4.1/5.1 surround, because unlike you I do actually have surround systems in both my bedroom and living room, and want to use them where possible. 2. Whatever is needed to run Synthizer on WinRT, because I do want to launch on the Xbox One if possible. I recognize that both of those are kind of niche, that your time is limited, so I don't want to seem entitled. But as soon as both of those exist, I plan on doing some sort of Synthizer Godot integration, and maybe pushing for it to be merged upstream. Godot's audio system is super arbitrary, and I've hacked around some of its limitations because I think its higher-level primitives for reasoning about game development outweigh the shitty audio. But as soon as I can replace the audio subsystem with something better, I plan on doing the work to make that happen.

Re: Onslaught, audio Asteroids, early Linux/Windows beta

@6 Definitely let me know. I have a 5.1 system in my bedroom and it works well. Godot's audio subsystem is a bit crappy currently in that sounds to the left are *only* heard from the left with nothing in the right channel, for instance. But that doesn't matter as much for an arcade-like shooter, and I'll probably do a better audio subsystem for future titles.
