It's also the only part of the 360's firmware that Microsoft haven't buggered about with apart from changing the font and background color. To answer the earlier question about software updates, the xbox checks for them on sign-in and pops up a dialogue box asking if you want to download and install it. The default option is no, as it is with every yes no box so go up one to yes. The next box to appear has a progress bar in it for the download of the update. It's possible to cancel out of this box so if the downloads taking too long and you want to play like... right now, you can hit b to cancel. Keep in mind though that xbox 360s that don't have the latest updates installed aren't allowed to sign into xbox live. Once the download is done, the xbox reboots and pops up the installation progress box. Unless it's a huge update this normally hangs about for 30 seconds before the update completes and you are taken to the dashboard. Larger updates can take longer and can also force multiple reboots. On the subject of game downloads, there is a notification sound that plays when downloads complete, the only flaw is it's the same sound for every notification you get so if you unlock an achievement you will here this sound, if a friend signs in... that sound will play and so on. You just have to go check your downloads. I don't remember how to do that, or if they have removed this feature in the later versions of the firmware. I have used the other way, ress the circle button to hear the beep and notice when a game has been downloaded this way. But if you try occasionally to press the back button and cancel the download, if it's still downloading the console will as you to confirm that with a beep. this is all for ps3 of course... and if you leave the download open, then it will install right away. If you have multiple things downloading in the background, then when they're done downloading they will all be under the games tab just below the disc. They will be the first option up from the bottom, and the bottom is the folder containing all your downloaded games. For the ps3, importing games is as simple as buying the disc for that game from Japan or whatever other country... or if you want to go digital, create an account for that region so youcan access the psn store for that region. download prices are usually the same as physical games in that region, and you don't need a ps+ subscription to get them. The only catch is because of the currency difference, you will have to buy psn cards for that region which can be easily done online. Your more likely to get better deals buying physical copies which is what I do myself. Downloading a game is quite simple. Make sure that you have a microsoft account and a gamertag. You will also need a xbox live gold subscription. Once you have all that you will sign in on your console with your account details which is your email and password. If you've got a USB keyboard, This process will be much easier. You will need a little sighted assistance to key in this information but the console will offer up the chance to remember your details so that you will be automatically signed in from then on. Once you've dealt with the hard part and got your xbox signed in, head on over to the store on computer sign in there, find a game and buy it via paypal or whatever suits you best. You will have to enter billing details the first time, but they will be remembered and buying stuff in the future is done in a couple of clicks. Once you have bought something it goes into your download queue which you can edit by clicking on the link to your download queue. The buttons to reorder items were accessible the last I checked this way if you buy more than one thing and you want a smaller title to download first so you have something to play while a larger title downloads you can do that. Once your done shopping, you can do one of the two following things. Turn your xbox off and back on again, when your xbox signs in it automatically checks for downloads and downloads them. If your in the middle of a game and don't want to have to restart the console you can manualy force the xbox to check for downloads. On the xbox controller there is a large round button in the centre, it's got an x cut into it, This is the guide button. Press the guide button and you will here a chime sound that sounds like it's playing in reverse. The guide is a minimal menue that lets you get into settings and messages without going through the dashboard it's also what makes the system more useable for us. In the guide, hold down the left button on the controller's d-pad you will here a couple of sounds that sound like shuffling fabric. This sound is you moving through tabs in the guide. The tab that you want to find is furthermost to the left so hold the button til the shuffling stops now, scroll down to the bottom of the menu here, it doesn't rap so you will stop at the bottom. Move up twice and hit A after a few seconds your download queue will be displayed on screen and anything in here starts downloading automatically. You can exit out of this screen and your stuff will keep downloading. Games can range from a few hundred MB to 7 to 8 GB with a couple of games, GTA V for example being much bigger than that. Once your games have downloaded, then end up in my games. You can access my games by goin g into the guide and doing what you did to find downloads but instead of going up twice for downloads only go up once for my games. Games are sorted in alphabetical order from left to right. Hit A on a game and you will be presented with a menu with options to play, delete, view it's achievements and DLC. Lucky enough we land right on play so hit A again to launch the game.What a wall of text. If you have any more questions ask away. And for the ps3, you can basically memorize everything because it doesn't wrap and updates don't change it very often. The xbox360 is nown to change a lot, as Exodus said. I also like the fact that the ps3 is region free, so if a game comes out in Japan or another region that is playable but not released here in the US, we can also buy it physically and nowadays also digitally. I'll tackle the online stores first.Both the PSN and xbox live have online access to their stores. They are both accessible, though the psn usually has it's games listed at better prices and it generally has more content. Beyond the store part, the xbox website also lets you exchange messages with your xbox live friends, set up game invites and generally do most things that you can do on the xbox dashboard. I don't have a ps4, and I probably wont have a ps4 unless some exclusive comes out to tempt me back to the land of consoles. That exclusive will probably be rock band The ps3's system software has largely stayed the same over the years. It's made up of a bunch of tabs that run horizontally from left to right, the tabs contain vertically scrolling menus that don't r ap so it's very easy to navigate. the xbox dashboard on the other hand is a bit of a dog's dinner. The dashboard has been changed about by microsoft no less than 4 times over the years, in it's current incarnation it resembles the windows 8 start menu with page after page of differently sized tiles many of wich dump you back in the same place when you click on them. The only bit I bother with is the bottom left tile on the first page which lets you into a list of the apps and games you've played last and the tile 2 above that which activates what ever is in the DVD drive. The ps3 gets bonus points for the audio thumbnails that play when you insert a game. Each one is different and lets you identify what game your about to play without loading it up. Both stores let you pay for your games with credit cards, xbl also lets you use paypal. As for what games are still up for download, the majority of them still should be though I can't say for sure with mor e research. Both systems are usable. One has the better menu system the other has the better online friend management system. You will have to decide what you would rather. I know personally I prefer the ps3 the menue system just swings it for me. \i'll cut this short before it turns into more of an epic infodump. I hope this helped at least a little.
