Re: Scanning and OCR tools
Re: Scanning and OCR tools I chose Open Book because I liked how uncomplicated it was, and with it being a Freedom Scientific product, I thought it would get along with JAWS.At the time I bought Open Book, I thought that Kurzweil was a device, and all I needed was software. Re: Scanning and OCR tools
Re: Scanning and OCR tools As far as comparing Omnipage and Finereader there's no competition, this is why both K1000 and OpenBook use it so you'd be getting very similar recognition results, maybe slightly better with K1000 if it really does use a newer Finereader. The difference will be in the interface you'll be using to then read the results, and that's when you get into personal preference territory. Both programs as well as the official Abyy fine reader have trials so you can just try all of them and see which one you like best. Re: Scanning and OCR tools
Re: Scanning and OCR tools Hi Ciao, Interestingly enough, I don' seem to find it on appstore, and I think the beta/demo version, is discontinued or it exists only on Android. So, sorry about that.I myself use ABBYY fine reader 12 pro, and I consider it the best. It's amazing! Re: Scanning and OCR tools
Re: Scanning and OCR tools @PitermachYou could be right about Open Book using an older version of Abby Fine Reader, Open Book has been at v9.0 for quite a while. I tried to find out which version Open Book is using but couldn't find an executable to get the version number from.Still, it performs a lot better than the latest version of OmniPage did, and that's all that's important to me. Re: Scanning and OCR tools I think for iOS, you cannot get it, though. or I maybe wrong on that. I have the full version of the app itself, so I really don't know much about the demo thingy. I know for android you can download it, you can take 25 pictures and that's it.And for windows OCR, I agreed with Peter... k1000 is the best software out there. Re: Scanning and OCR tools
Re: Scanning and OCR tools Going back to Windows OCR, both OpenBook and Kurzweil are powered by FineReader, with Kurzweil running the latest Finereader 12. I haven't used OpenBook in a while but I think it's using an older version of FR, though people can correct me on this. I personally prefer Kurzweil's interface. It's also more configurable and has more features. Case and point is that I used it not just to scan things, but also to read Epub books and do basic word processing. All that being said, both K1000 and OB are very expensive and if all you need is OCR, the official Finereader app will be more than enough and cost considerably less. There's also Serotek's docuscan, which you can get for pretty cheep in a subscription model, but it's been a while since I used it and I'm not sure what engine it's using. Re: Scanning and OCR tools
Re: Scanning and OCR tools For me KNFB reader is pretty much like most other OCR apps. Sometimes it does a really good job, other times it returns complete gibberish. The one thing I do like about KNFB Reader is that all the processing is done on your device. Many of the other OCR app, especially the free ones, do the OCR processing in the cloud which can bring up privacy issues. Re: Scanning and OCR tools
Re: Scanning and OCR tools For a scanner, I use a Canon Canoscan LiDe 200 I bought back before I lost my vision. except for the part where you select the area to scan, I found the user interface fully accessible. This wasn't a problem because it defaults to scanning the whole 11 by 8.5 area. It's also USB powered so there's only one cable to deal with. And it's reasonably priced at around $100.For OCR I started off using Microsoft Word with OmniPage, what a mistake! The only part of OmniPage's user interface that is accessible were the windows you get when you access it through Word. Plus its OCR output wasn't very consistent. Sometime it got it right, and sometimes the same document came out as gibberish. I eventually got fed up with it and switched to something else.I then tried Freedom Scientific's Open Book and was so pleased with its OCR functions, that I converted the trial version to a full version.Because Open Book uses the Abby Fine Reader OCR engine, I can second the recommendation to use it. Re: Scanning and OCR tools
Re: Scanning and OCR tools Hello, The scanners may vary. You could choose anything from Plastek opticbook, I think I will buy Plastek OPticbook 3800, or HP ScanJet 2500 Pro.As for OCR, You could scan a page with any of these scanners, and use ABBYY fine reader 12 pro. I've been using it since October, and I still thank my friend to this day for recommending it to me. It is accessible, +it converts images with text to microsoft word or PDF, saves the interface of the page with not only plain text (black and white), but also keeps pictures, tables, bold, underlined, indented, coloured text. +ABBYY is the best tool for converting PDF documents to word documents. If you buy one of these scanners, (Opticbook as far as I know comes with ABBYY fine reader sprint), you will also get software to do your work.Hope this helps.
