Steam and Star Wars KOTR

Hello, I've never played on steam or even have it downloaded. I've heard Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic is accessible though, and I'd love to play this. Can anyone tell me how to set up steam, and what I'll need to play this game in particular?

I played KotOR when I was still sighted enough to play video games and I can't begin to imagine how it would be considered accessible. Where did you hear this?

Re: Steam and Star Wars KOTR

the old KOTOR would be the inaccessible one, on the pc it was driven by the mouse. If you were lucky enough at the time to have a xbox, you could play it on there no problem. The good part is that for us, it doesn't end there. KOTOR is being rereleased on most platforms with modern controler support. You can get it on android, iOS and steam too iirc. They've taken the old xbox control scheme and reused it. This is a good thing because the left and right bumpers on whatever control you use will cycle you through the  interactable targets in the area around you. The camera is even turned to face whatever you're pointing at.  A press of the a button will have whoever you're controling at the time run to the target and perform whatever action you've set them to do at the time. This will work if your target is over the other side of a room, through a door or what have you. they'll stroll right over there without you having to guide them. Menues a
nd dialogue segments can be handled with you're OCR  thing of choice. I used it in KOTOR2, which was the first one to be modernised for windows. Why they did 2 first, I don't know

Re: Steam and Star Wars KOTR

I suppose I see what you're saying, with the way it will automatically move you to intractable objects and so on. Of course I'm sure there are maps that would still require some vision to navigate as you wouldn't simply be able to navigate using intractable objects, and in general navigation and combat would both still be very difficult, I'd think - to say nothing of upgrading characters, dealing with equipment, and so on. I guess this is one of those situations where people have different definitions of "accessible" - I think the fact that a blind player is able to hack together some ways to accomplish certain tasks in the game is better than nothing, but personally I wouldn't call it accessible. But I'm not dissing anyone who would say this counts as accessibility - I'm just explaining why I was confused by the statement.(Side note - KotOR was one of my all-time favorite games and a major influence on what I hope to accomplish
as a developer, so I appreciate this conversation, and truly hope that someday blind gamers can fully appreciate this game, or something like it.)

Yeah I'd love to know how things like combat and stuff are even doable. Also @exodus have you managed to beat these games in this fashion then? If it truly is that playable, I'd pick it up tomorrow in a heartbeat. I've seen parts of this game, and the story really intrigued me.

Same for me. I kinda wanna try this out on my 360. Memorising menus is no problem for me, that's what i've always done with videogames, and I don't have windows 10 so the OCR on the xbox app isn't an option.

Re: Steam and Star Wars KOTR

I played these games before I lost my vision and can tell you that if you can come up with a way to play these games you are in for a real treat. But to call them a first person shooter is some what misleading. While the games are presented to the player from the character's point of view as in first person shooters, they have RPG elements in them in that your character has traits and that you gain experience points which you use by allocating them across your characters traits, your characters also has a level ranking which also affects it's traits. They also have adventure game elements in that much of the game's outcome depends on how you handle the dialog in the game, ask the wrong question or ask questions in the wrong sequence and events may not go as you would have liked. There are also a lot of side quests that you can either ignore or try to accomplish and they too can affect the game's outcome. At the time first person shooters were my favorite genre of game to play, even with that, the Knights of the Republic series was easily my favorite Star Wars based games.

So one thing I'm noticing, you can only cycle between objects close by, you still have to walk around to get to different rooms, so there's a lot of trial and error.

Hi.I am wondering though, how are you able to complete the first scene of the game, I heard in a let's play of the game that you have to move an astro mech droid to repair some ship systems, I don't know how this should actually work. How did you guys do the character creation process, is that readable with OCR?Greetings Moritz.

If I'm being honest for Kotor 2 I don't believe you actually need a controller, you can use Q and E to target objects. You're standard W S A and D do the walking stuff. I double check later though, I use a controller myself.
