Re: The Ethics of Digital-Product Licensing and Media/Software Acquisition

I personally believe that giving out keys for games is not OK. If it’s a product such as monkey Bizness where it’s sold on disk, I think it’s all right to sell the disk to other people, because in that case you’re relying on a physical object to play the game. It’s sort of like buying music on disk. If you sell the CD, you can’t listen to the music anymore because you don’t own it. If it’s an online account-based deal like GMA games, As long as you use the conventional way of registering another computer under your account, there’s no problem with giving your key to another person either. Broadly speaking, if the terms of service say don’t do it, then don’t do it.

The Ethics of Digital-Product Licensing and Media/Software Acquisition

Moderators: Feel free to move this discussion to another room if it does not fall under the scope of this side of the forum.A post on the forum got me thinking about the ethics of software distribution and generally how individuals should properly acquire digital-based products.Sparing any personal attacks (please refrain from pointing fingers and starting unnecessary arguments), what are your views on what makes for acceptable digital product acquisition? I realize some folks may claim it's much easier than others may make it out to be, but as is the case with any post on this forum surrounding this issue, it seems to be a little more complicated than simply, "If you didn't buy it, you shouldn't own a copy."This is a wildly popular topic -- piracy has always been a hot-button issue in the digital landscape, and I'm curious how people (specifically on this forum) feel abstractly about this; hence my plead for folks to not bring in outside bickering regarding particular matters from the forum.Note this can pertain to any form of digital product (media, software, etc).
