Could someone please explain the point of downloading these sorts of apps that are basically installing multiple instances of Chrome and wasting resources, when you can just use your browser to access the same thing on the web? This app allows chatting not only with friends but also with random people, thus it can be used as a dating app. As you have a possibility to have live chat, the process of choosing a proper partner goes much faster. Ten years ago you'd develop completely different apps for desktop platforms and mobile platforms, maybe even different apps for iOS and Android. Now, there are tools for building web apps on any modern platform you can imagine and you don't need to write the same app two to four times, and test it two to four times, and update it two to four times, and have two to four developer teams. Inaccessible native applications on Windows are just being replaced by inaccessible web apps. Those developers who want to make their apps accessible still will, and those that don't still won't. There are even cases like Visual Studio Code and Skype where you can go into focus mode with NVDA or whatever the equivalent is with JAWS and use it like it's native. Is it optimal? No, but it's the future. And as for opening another Chrome window, yes it's sort of like that. The thing about the desktop webapps though is that they can access some features of your computer that native apps always have been able to access but that browsers traditionally lock down because your average website doesn't need to use them. A good newer example of an interface done right IMO is Elten and how you can navigate around it. I just want tab to take me from conversation list, message input, a toolbar foe chat related features, a member list, ETC. Give me hotkeys to access each, and we're good, plus, how about a tree view for servers and channels like TT? They can be slower to use than native desktop apps depending on how they're built. They consume much more memory than they would if they were simple native desktop apps simply because they're in a browser window. When I use an app for Windows, I want it to behave like an app for Windows and not like I just launched Chrome to use a website. Yes, sometimes being able to navigate by headings in an app is nice, but not all apps are built for easy keyboard navigation. What really infuriates me though is when some site says "download our desktop app," and it's really just a wrapper for their site's interface. Some of these apps don't even minimize to the system tray, so the user needs to keep them open. So, they give people an app so they don't have to keep their browsers open, but surprise, it's just another Chrome window that needs to be kept open. It's just going from one browser window to another with the same interface. Where is the logic in this? If I wanted a website, I'd go to the website. I get that web-based apps make it easier to make apps cross-platform, but not every single thing needs to be in a web browser that takes up more memory than it needs to in order to function.All that said, I can tolerate Skype thanks to doug Lee's JAWS scripts. The app has its performance issues, but the scripts make things a little easier. Discord also looks to be pretty clean from what I've seen of it, although it's lacking any sort of automatic reading of messages. I will however say that Discord is most certainly getting there, and I have no reason to hate it. On Windows, I started using Unigram the most; WhatsApp Desktop is a total joke, Skype is cluttered and slow, Discord has accessibility issues, and TeamSpeak doesn't work well with NVDA. I have yet to try Zoom on Windows, thogh I think it works better for Jaws users.
