This sounds much better than SB's interpretation of the 24/96. I went
with Voxengo's r8brain pro and am a very happy listener. With most
albums I actually can't hear a difference between the downsampled
tracks and the original (played on an Oppo 980h). I tested a few down
to 16/44.1 and that did bring a noticable loss.

Nowhere in this thread I read which out of the SB3 is used. I assume
that it is the analog. What happens if the SB3 is fed 24/96 and the
TOSLINK output is fed into an external AV (as I do). Is there also a
degradation? Sean will be able to answer this.

greetings

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter playing 88 kHz files

2008-02-12 Thread DCtoDaylight

Ok, I was bored so.
I downloaded SlimCenter, installed, was mildly annoyed to discover it
doesn't reuse ANY of my previous settings, forcing me to manual reset
everything, was mildly annoyed when it ignored my instructions NOT to
use iTunes, resulting in doubles of everything in my library (flac and
mp4), but I eventually forced it to behave

Once over the annoying install issues, I am now playing a 24/88.2 wav
file of Pat Metheny's Imaginary Day album without problem. The
transporter is reporting it as 24/88.2 as well. Seems ok to me!

I can't test 24/88.2 flacs right now, as I don't have any. I'll try
encoding some of my .wav's tomorrow, and let you know how it goes.

Cheers,Dave

I haven't tried myself, as I've sort of been waiting for the whole 7.0
platform to be formally released. Given the duet requires it, I'm
expecting this to happen very soon.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter playing 88 kHz files

2008-02-12 Thread RGibran

Has anyone had any luck playing 24/88.2 WAV files on the Transporter
after updating to the FW 40 Firmware?

My Transporter always played the Linn or Music Giants 24/88.2 .flac or
.wma files, and still does, though it reports file properties
inaccuratly for the .wma files. According to Sean the software was
decimating these files and not playing them properly.

My Transporter would not play a 24/88.2 .wav file, and still will not
after FW 40 upgrade. There is only silence, and then it seemingly
locks up Transporter, preventing it playing anything else until a mains
power reset.

The only issue you MIGHT have is when the input impedance of the two
amps is widely different. Also, I presume the amp gains are equivalent
(or you have some method of balancing the respective signals?)

Best to try it and see - can't do any harm.

If I understand correctly, the Duet is basically a displayless SB3,
which would imply that it will be restricted to 44/48k as well.

That is exactly the case.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] dual outputs?

2008-02-12 Thread ratso

i was wondering if i could get some technical help here. i have a new
transporter and am toying with the idea of getting a new amp. the amp i
am thinking of is a chinese SS integrated with no preamp inputs. if
using a preamp i was going to get some y-cables and biamp (well i run
Gallo Ref 3.1's so it's not technically biamping it's just powering the
woofer)the signal. seeing as how i wouldn't be using a preamp, could i
do the same thing from the rca outputs of my transporter - split the
output signal between two amps with a y cable?

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Not all 24/96 flac's are created equal

2008-02-12 Thread Phil Leigh

It's generally held (at least by me!) that 24/44.1 is not really that
much different to 24/48 or 24/96.

24/44.1 is a bit better than 16/44.1 - even though we probably only
actually get a usable 20/44.1 in practice.

And yes...I've used all these formats extensively in the studio and I'm
not deaf :o)

Regarding r8brain as SRC to 16/44.1 there are better things. r8brain
doesn´t perform complex dither. You may try ssrc_hp with this frontend
for example: http://www.holliesoft.de/software/ssrcgui_english.htm
The proper ssrc compile is on http://www.rarewares.org/others.php
Try ATH based dither or with less amplitude with at least triangular
noise (1)
Hope it works better for you.

Well I was imagining that if one amp had a very high input impedance
and the other was uncharacteristically low they might upset each
other if simply wired in parallel - but on reflection I guess that
wouldn't happen if the source impedance is low.
