Johan,
Could you tell me how different they sound or when you use X-DAC v8
between TP and MF A5? Thanks.

Hi Wireless,

I have an original Hydra, I haven't heard the latest versions.

Have a look at this link to see what I thought:

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] This is torture

2008-03-16 Thread dagordon

I've apparently been too busy enjoying the music to follow up on my own
thread.

The Transporter is significantly better than the SB3 (with Bolder
modified Elpac power supply, FWIW) in every aspect of musical
reproduction. I didn't expect the difference to be as significant as it
is. Perhaps the biggest difference to my ears is the extent to which the
Transporter conveys a sense of the space around individual instruments.

I love the new system. Got some high res files from www.itrax.com and
they sound amazing.

Mine is simply connected to the pre/power via xlr's

Wireless, you should also look at the Isotek mini-sub and the sigmas as
a very good alternative to the hydra, they are quite popular in Europe
but im not sure they are in the US market... The inclusion of the
min-sub to my system was heavenly, probably my best purchase since it
made all my equipment sound as it good as it should, good luck
searching...

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Studio Acoustics speakers

2008-03-16 Thread Gus

I’m trying to figure out the best option for installing ceiling or wall
mounted speakers and came across this:
http://www.studioacoustics.com.au/home_inceiling.php?name=In-/-Ceiling-Speakers
Has anyone got any experience with these. There are 2 things I’m
trying to figure out:
1) Are the speakers any good (or is this another case of using
something whizzy so that people overlook the fundamentals – i.e. the
sound quality.
2) Are Studio Acoustics – generally speaking – any good?
Cheers,

Gus

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Jensen Speakers

2008-03-16 Thread Gus

I’m interested in opinions on Jensen speakers, particularly from anyone
who has used them with an SB3 or Duet.
If so, whether you’d recommend them and what particular models are well
suited for in-ceiling installation.
Thanks in advance for any info!

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] volume burst w/digital inputs even w/firmware 36

2008-03-16 Thread Shredder

UGH.

When I first got my TP, every time I tried to use the digital inputs, I
would experience a burst of volume whenever I hit play or switched
modes. I learned that that problem had been fixed w/new firmware (I had
been running fw 31). However, because I have SS (now SC) running on a
Thecus NAS, I couldn't update the firmware until a module came out for
the new version of SS/SC (or at least i couldn't figure out how to do
it).

Anyway, today, I downloadaed SC 7.0 w/the new Thecus module. The
firware was updated to v.36. Unfortunately, the burst still comes when
I turn on the digital inputs. I have tried reloading the fw a couple of
times. I even reloaded 7.0. NO LUCK.

ANy ideas how I can fix this problem? Thanks for the help.

That issue is supposed to be fixed in fw40
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42960) which is still
in testing. You should be able to download and try out that version if
you're so inclined.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] CD Player as DAC recommendation?

2008-03-16 Thread upstateaudio

A little update... Well, I started this thread I'm happy to report
that I decided to go with SB3 running through Cambridge Audio 840C. I
was too lazy to build a noiseless PC... that project is still on hold.

I still like the idea of having a standalone CDP with my audiophile
system. Call me old-fashioned, but I don't see that being a negative.
There are some CDs I'd like to take the effort to burn into HD
carefully, going through EAC and labelling the files, but there are
some I'd rather just pop in the CDP here there. You can't beat
 versatility.

Cambridge Audio 840C can be had now for around $1100 - $1200, so it
puts it on par with Benchmark DAC, more or less. So for similar price,
you also get an excellent CDP, which is a huge plus. I haven't A-B'd
them, but 840C stacks up well. It uses two Analog Devices chips per
channel as DAC: that's 4 altogether... pretty killer if you ask me (I
think Benchmark also uses AD DAC chip? I know that many Esoterics do.)
Plus upsampling to 24/384. Really heavy-duty power supply. And in the
end, all I know is that the music from SB3 sounds fantastic going
through 840C. Hopefully later down the line, I'll get to compare
 directly with Transporter.

How does the Cambridge playing the CD compare to the SB3 playing
through the Cambridge's DAC?

As I see from your other post about Jensen, I see you're looking for
some in-wall/ceiling speakers.

Personally I would find a dealer and listen to some of the options. I
found that Paradigm made some nice stuff. http://www.paradigm.com
