Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Power supply A/B
I haven't tried anything other than the stock powersupply with my SB3 yet, but I did notice the very narrow soundstage compared to other transports and sources. I put one ferrite chokes around the DC and the AC portion of the cords, it opened it up a bit. Will build a filter for the DC line in a few days. -- Dazza Dazza's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16416 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47658 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Ground Loop and Transporter
Timothy/tcutting. I think you're both correct. It's not a low freq component (or I would have heard 50Hz from the sub) and if it's high freq then it must be at a level to pass through the amp get cut off by the speaker cross over filters. The Denon is about 3 above the Rotel...this 3 being made up of supports at the front and 3 3x3 fans at the rear. Even with the fans on, the amp sometimes cuts out. Of course, it could be that I'm going deaf ;) -- chinablues chinablues's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7955 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40112 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Power supply A/B
There might be a small difference between the two SB3s as well, components sometimes change due to prices and availability. IE an earthquake somewhere halts the production at site A, manufacturer have to get components from site B. -- Uluen Uluen's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12166 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47658 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Ground Loop and Transporter
I've seen faulty amps do this with instabilty causing high frequency oscillation that you can't hear... Thing to do is to get a power meter that measures the current on the mains and see what current is drawn with NO input signal and with speakers connected/not connected - see what differences there are. I'd get the amp checked out. It shouldn't cut out unless you are seriously over-heating it (which sounds unlikely from what you've said) or driving it into clipping (again - it would have to be running flat out for that to make it cut-out regularly). -- Phil Leigh You want to see the signal path BEFORE it gets onto a CD/vinyl...it ain't what you'd call minimal...SB3+Stontronics PSU - Altmann JISCO/UPCI - TACT RCS 2.2X with Good Vibrations S/W - MF X-DAC V3/X-PSU/X-10 buffer (Audiocomm full mods)- Linn 5103 - Linn Aktiv 5.1 system (6x LK140's, ESPEK/TRIKAN/KATAN/SEIZMIK 10.5), Townsend Supertweeters, Kimber Chord cables Phil Leigh's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=85 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40112 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Missing link? A little help please.
Well you're not comparing apples with apples, since the AES/EBU input may exhibit different jitter and signal recovery properties to the spdif input. In every experiment I've tried - including some seriously expensive CD transports - a spdif-spdif comparison into the same dac, with same cable, has shown the SB to be at least as good - and usually better. An obscure possibility is that some people prefer a more jittery sound...but personally I don't buy that. Given that issues with jitter/clock recovery will not affect frequency response, dynamics, soundstaging or anything remotely analogue in nature - only timing/prat remains. There's some evidence to suggest that the brain has to work harder to listen to a jittery replay chain, and this is fatiguing. The answer to the question how little jitter is effectively no jitter remains elusive IMHO. I think this was the thing that the original designers of digital audio missed (well, that and the fact that 20 bit is way better than 16-bit...). The clock recovery has to be better than barely adequate. Far better to clock the transport accurately from the DAC itself and get rid of that jitter. Certain (generally older) DACS may not play nicely with the SB - I've seen some threads on this. Modern ones (last 10 years) should have no problems via SPDIF. ymmv -- Phil Leigh You want to see the signal path BEFORE it gets onto a CD/vinyl...it ain't what you'd call minimal...SB3+Stontronics PSU - Altmann JISCO/UPCI - TACT RCS 2.2X with Good Vibrations S/W - MF X-DAC V3/X-PSU/X-10 buffer (Audiocomm full mods)- Linn 5103 - Linn Aktiv 5.1 system (6x LK140's, ESPEK/TRIKAN/KATAN/SEIZMIK 10.5), Townsend Supertweeters, Kimber Chord cables Phil Leigh's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=85 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47988 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Missing link? A little help please.
This sounds very similar to my own experience. Different equipment but I introduced the SB3 as a transport and compared it with my well-loved CDT each going into the same well-loved DAC. The old CDT trounced the SB3 on short or long term listening. Despite same cables, same DAC etc etc. One day I did a blind test between the SB3 and the trusty CDT and picked the SB3 four times out of of four. Statistically not significant i.e. doesn't prove there was a real difference. But certainly this result -did- invalidate my impressions of the CDT being consistently better even with a short comparison. Is this story weird, surprising? Well...I was shocked at the time certainly! This doesn't mean you will reach the same conclusions - I am merely relating my own experience. (About a year later and I use the SB3 analogue outs now...) Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] FLAC on a Mac with iTunes - CAN DO!
yooper;304351 Wrote: kphinney, Thanks a lot for the topic and explanation of getting everything to work. I too use flac, and would be interested to try this. I do have a question.. once iTunes picks up the flac files can you use iTunes to add album art to the flac files? My current flac library (also around 500 GB) does have all the album art, but most of it is Amazon quality (240 x 240) and it would be nice to add iTunes hi-rez album art. My other question, would Slim recognize this work around if I decided to let iTunes manage the music within Slim? Thanks again, Mark All very good questions Mark. I'll check it out later this evening but I have to think the adding artwork via iTunes will Not work. Since the programs create a virtual disk I have a feeling it's a one-way path. At best, your new artwork will stay only as long as the virtual disk remains open. Closing it (or the programs) and reopening will mirror your FLACs again, without and modifications. All of my artwork is retained from FLAC - iTunes. I don't trust the setup enough to let iTunes manage it yet, even if it is possible due to the same reason mentioned above. Give me a run down if you give it a chance. -- kphinney SB3 (x2) and Transporter Rotel RCD-1070 CIAudio DVA-2 w/ VAC-1 PS JoLida 102B Omega Grand 6's AKG K501 kphinney's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10409 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47878 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
