I just read this again - that's just laughable - this reviewer thinks an
AV receiver is audiophile quality, but the analogue outputs of the
Transporter are not?

hahahaha.

And my SBB as well...Is it wrong that my alarm clock is worth more than

Such claims have been made many times in the past. Upon further
investigation, they always turned out to be:

1) not audible in a blind test, hence almost certainly the result of
expectation bias, or

2) the result of replay gain. WAV files do not have replay gain (I'm
pretty sure), FLAC files do. So if you've enabled replaygain for your
FLACs there will be an audible difference, simply due to the volume
adjustment. It is well established that volume differences have a very
strong affect on perceived audio quality.

Not forgetting of course that issue with Apple Lossless files where the
replayrain was being applied twice, thus making them sound even less
like the WAV files they were compared to.

I'm amazed no-one's mentioned Mackie monitors yet. I've got a set of
HR624's, and they're absolutely fantastic.

Alternatively, Genelec monitors are almost universally acclaimed, so
they've got to be worth an audition

The article says Sonos and Slim Devices both use very good
analog-to-digital converters in their products, which means you can
connect their analog outputs to a high-quality self-amplified speaker
system and get great results.

Surely they mean digital-to-analog convertors??

I have a paid of HR828 and they are fantastic. But, they are not cheap,
mine were about $1200 for the pair. They are pretty ugly, they are fine
for my recording studio, but way too ugly for my wife's approval.

And the big thing: they are studio monitors. They aim to reveal what the
music sounds like. They do not hide anything with warmth. So its like
watching HD TV with an older news anchor, where the age lines and
wrinkles that you never saw on regular TV are now clear and easy to see.

I also have a pair of Swans M-200's (based on a recommendation from this
forum some time ago). They're serving as bedroom speakers right now,
hooked up to a Tivo and an SB2. Sound quality is (IMHO) excellent for
the price, and the build quality is also pretty amazing. Highly
recommended if you can find a pair (I think they've been discontinued
for a while).
