In all seriousness, I suggest you order a 1.5m (this length is important
 - 1m is too short) BlueJeans Belden 1694a spdif coax cable - it will
cost peanuts (well OK - about £20+).

Well, Phil, I did order one and it arrived today.

You may be right. My initial impression, listening to piano music, is
that the sound is cleaner and the ambiance around the piano is more
convincing. Yes, very subtle and subjective observations.

Stan Beresford himself is sceptical: he knows many prefer an electrical
coupling between SB and his DAC, but as he will say is that his DAC does
improve the SB.

So there you have it. And I have the cable. At I least determined that
the electrical connection was not worse that the optical, and I now
have a spare optical for the PC (the other is needed for the Virgin
Media Box.)

In a couple of weeks I will send my 6/3 back to Stan for upgrade to
6/4, and we will see where that gets us.

Thanks for the tip, Phil.

Yea, I know, and I remain sceptical.

Stan is probably right: there ain't no difference, or none worth
talking about. I bought the cable on the assurance it wasn't worse than
the optical link, because I wanted an extra switched input.

I am fully expecting more of Stan's upgrade 6/3 6/4

Is it still open, this is the kind of bug I want to vote on.

I did but it got put with another bug on soundcheck that had nothing to
do with it. That bug was declared fixed but not this problem. I tried a
couple of times to re-submit but finally gave up as they didn't seem to
understand the problem or the bug got lost in other soundcheck
problems, not sure what happened. I also might have submitted it wrong
the second and third times. Maybe I'll try again when I get a chance.
It should have been a real easy fix. Only use one or the other but
don't add them together as they are the same thing just a different way
of doing replay gain.

 Pat

Would this have something to do with the power supply? Or, are they
spurious artifacts relating to the display? Would a battery supply
mitigate this?

I seem to recall this was one of the effects upgrading to a linear
power sully in the SB3 helps address. The SB3 has a DAC that would have
only been found in $1000+ CD players 10 years ago. I would use it for
now if I was starting out in HiFi. I think the next few years will see
amazing advances in powered speakers and DACs, which would suffice as
the rest of the chain behind the slim front end device.

Personally, I am keeping the SB3-Accuphase DAC-Accuphase amp-
speaker chain. The 3 latter elements I invested into nearly 10 years
ago and they still sound great. So my next evolutionary step needs to
be considered carefully, espacially given the way I see the market and
my preferences evolving. I do think that in 5 years I will be listening
to something like a next gen SB3 through either powered speakers or a
headphone amp. And the latter part of the chain I have and will never
need to upgrade unless it breaks.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Dummy Guide to Digital HiFi

2008-11-15 Thread pablolie

I was asked by a number of people to put together a Dummy Guide to
digital music, and also happen to know the people that publish the
official series. I am interested to see if this very knowledgable forum
has a few people willing to collaboratively put this together and
co-author it, since the collective knowledge here is quite amazing (and
superior to mine in many areas). If there are replies to this, I shall
put together a collaborative work environment (webex connect if that
works for everybody) and tell people how to access it in this very
thread.
