So far I haven't done any terribly serious listening tests, and my
system has undergone a number of changes over the last month, so I
still don't feel familiar enough with its sound to engage in reliable
tests yet. I did decide that people's suggestions to use SOX to
downsample 24/96 material is probably a good one to isolate the
encoding as the sole source of the any audible differences. Will try
to get around to that soon, after looking for best parameters to use.

24/96 A Love Supreme and the 24/96 Kinks Preservation Act II

I believe I purchased both from HD Tracks

But don't you use a TacT digital preamp ? it's a filter on the DAC so
it does only affect the analog out ? or are conecting via analog to the
TacT ?

A Love Surpreme is a very old recording that shouldn´t be able to use
more then ~12bit resolution. You´ll have 12bit of noise down there i
supppose.

I wonder how with that one you can max out the dynamic range of 16bit
with your 2-way floorstander and need 24bit to hear it more dynamics?
Did you try to properly downsample this recording and listen it on your
system in comparison?

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] RC (Inguz etc.)

2010-09-29 Thread tonyptony

I decided to redo my sweeps (figured since I got the Touch I'd generate
another set of correction files), but I ran into a problem I never saw
before.

When I did the impulseprep on the left and right sweep files it
generated the ImpulseResponse wav file but then dropped out. When I
looked at the prep.log file it indicated that the distance and timing
for the right file were both 0. I opened that sweep file in Audacity
and it looks fine, not much different than the left file (which showed
valid numbers in the log file). Anybody know what gives?

No. I am in fact using The Transporter in a digital loop, so I am using
The Tact as pre-amp and roomcorrection, and then digital loop returning
to The Transporter. I doing this because I think the DAC in The
Transporter sounds best.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] DAC problem, VTL DAC does not lock !

2010-09-29 Thread JohnSwenson

The coax output on all the SB devices is right on the money voltage
wise, no need for any attenuators.

The crystals used in most of the SB devices are pretty cheap crystals
with fairly wide initial tolerances (well within the official S/PDIF
spec though).

SOME DACs have a special narrow band PLL which allows for significant
jitter reduction, BUT they have a hard time syncing to sample rates
which are fairly far away from the official center frequency. Its
possible to get a squeezebox which might fall in that category.

Such DACs will almost always have a wide setting which will lock onto
the further out signal.

If your DAC doesn't have the narrow PLL you can ignore the above.
