Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What's better?
I would say given the level of your system you should be considering a Transporter or SB/External DAC equivalent. -- The Smokester The Smokester's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9198 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33836 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Did anyone mention High Definition Tape Transfers at http://www.highdeftapetransfers.net/ Also, use a download manager such as GetRight for these big files and just come back later after it done. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Q:BEST classical music review site
Don't know if this is a corollary to what you ask but I think an excellent starting point for a (mainly) symphonic collection is to acquire the recently remastered RCA Living Presence SACD/CD's such as here: http://www.elusivedisc.com/prodinfo.asp?number=RCASASET1234 This link is for the first four sets but there are also sets 5 6. There is also a correspond Mercury Living Presence reissue of 4 sets: http://www.elusivedisc.com/prodinfo.asp?number=MLPSAMSET1234 Some of these are also available on vinyl but those don't fit in a slim server very easily. -- The Smokester The Smokester's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9198 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33496 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] HDTT new download store
Veggen, I had similar problems. I emailed their customer service with my order number. They immediately allowed me direct access to (a part of) their server for 24 hours to download. This solved the problem. So, I suggest giving customer service a try. -- The Smokester The Smokester's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9198 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33156 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] my ripping tool of choice
tamanaco, - Yes. When I said Pro I meant the Reference version. -Based on the one experience where dBpowerAmp could not rip a track I went back to EAC and don't use dB... to rip. I rip to FLAC, edit the tags and then Batch Convert with dBpowerAmp to OGG or MP3 from there (for my digital audio players). I am not a very experienced dBpowerAmp user having just purchased three days ago. Personnally, I find all this ripping pretty labor intensive so if anyone comes up with a better scheme please let us know. Good luck with your system and please keep us posted on your thoughts and experiences. -- The Smokester The Smokester's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9198 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=32425 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] my ripping tool of choice
Just a comment on my experience: I use EAC, dBpowerAmp (latest R12), Foobar2000, Mediamonkey and the Godfather. They all have their strengths and sometimes one will work when the others won't. Yesterday I tried ripping a seedee with dBpowerAmp and it would not get the last track. EAC ripped it no problem. Generally I use EAC (in secure mode) for ripping. I like Foobar2000 for mass conversions but now mainly use dBpowerAmp Batch Converter (pro) because it is more graceful if it encounters a problem. Batch Converter will usually continue on to the next file while Foobar2000 just quits (usually in the middle of the night, of course). I keep and catalogue my albums with Mediamonkey since it is flexible enough for classical music and has a nice interface. But, there are times when editing the tags that only the Godfather will do. -- The Smokester The Smokester's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9198 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=32425 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Suggestion: New mid-market player
I already had an expensive DAC when I purchased the Squeezebox v3. It sounds great. Now I have discovered Studio Master downloads which are sampled at 24 bit, 88 kHz and beyond. The SB only samples up to 48 kHz so I end up downsampling. (Still sounds even better.) To get sampling to 96 kHz I would need to buy a TP when all I really need is the display and digital out with ultra-low jitter. Don't care about the analog side at all since I am supplying my own DAC. Don't know if I'm the only one who needs just this or is there a real market for such a device? -- The Smokester The Smokester's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9198 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31935 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: sound stage width
lafayette, This phenomena requires the preservation of phase coherence. You are quite right that the reflections coming from objects in and walls of the room will diminish or destroy the regular stereo, as well as this interesting phase, effect. Air's Carmel Prisoner on the album 10,000 Hz Legend is another great example with a tone near the end that sounds like it circles your head. -- The Smokester The Smokester's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9198 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31050 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Are there any PRat's out there?
wdrazek, I am running my SB3 wirelessly (encrypted 802.11g) and feeding the digital Toslink optical output into a Waida DAC. The sound is superb. Rplert's description of the analog outputs of the SB3 match my experience as well. Good for sleeping music but not suited for critical listening. Haven't heard the Transporter but hard to imagine it is better than the SB3 feeding a good DAC (which I happened to already have). -- The Smokester The Smokester's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9198 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31053 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
