The sample CD I chose was Santana's Shaman. So I guess this fits in the
busy category. For reference, the CD took up 519Mb for FLAC and it
 was only 138Mb for extreme MP3 VBR. That's a 3.75 x the disk space,
which is amazing since the MP3 sounds great at that quality level.

More precise terms than busy might be random or noisy. I believe
totally random data would sound like white noise and compress
negligibly or not at all. I suspect instrumentation or effects that
more closely resemble white noise reduce the incidence of data patterns
that would offer opportunities for any lossless algorithm to compress.

Have you tried ripping to WAV, then creating a FLAC and a WMA lossless
by converting from the same WAV file? That would rule out differences
in the rip.

I guess you didn't sense the sarcasm (the wink!). Anyway, of course,
they should sound the same. FLAC is better because 1) it is not
 proprietary (not M$) 2) supports tags 3) it's cross-platform (not just
Windows) and 4) decodes quickly and natively on SB3. (And, also, it's
 better because I say so.)
The native decoding on the SB2/3 is the reason I use FLAC. That enables
FF/RW within tracks, which is a must for me, though I gather others can
live without it just fine.

Have you totally ruled out Replay Gain being performed on the
Squeezebox end? Have you totally ruled out transcoding being performed
on the Slimserver end? I wish I could tell you precisely how to do
those things, but I can tell you that a difference in sound quality,
let alone a perceptible volume difference, is improbable in the extreme
when comparing lossless against lossless.

type of power supply. Is jitter reduced for a linear supply? Then we
could have a definitive answer, at least, for the digital output.

What you are seeing suggests radio interference (signal strength
indicators in my experience do not show this). I believe there is a new
plugin for server statistics; perhaps this can show you how many packets
are being lost due to interference. However, you might skip to trying to
resolve the problem. There are lots of posts about troubleshooting
interference. One recent one showed which channels are more effected by
microwaves, and others discuss how to learn which channels are already
in use by nearby wireless networks. Here is a post about what worked
for me:

sammie Wrote:
Ok, all set to order the new squeeze box 3, have it modded by Boulder
Cable, and get to work burning my entire CD Collection w/ EAC. But
this is all new to me, so I need some answers to a lot of questions and
 nudges in the right direction.

I own a laptop with a 60GB HD. Not enough for the music
collection...so, I'll need to buy an external HD. I was looking at
300GB Maxtor drives. I have no idea what kind of DVD RW drive I have.
I have read that Plextor DVD drives will burn better quality copies. I
have wireless router located in basement (I live in an old house, no
 cable outlets upstairs).

#1 Does the HD need to be plugged into the computer or can I place it
downstairs next to router + plug it into the router?
#2 Is the wireless network cabable of handling streaming large music
files, like full tracks from burned CD?
#3 Does computer need to be turned on to listen to burned CD's on HD
if HD is plugged into router?
#4 Is this a reliable way to listen to music, or am I setting myself
 up for frustration?
#5 Is it neccessary to buy Plextor drive or will the drive I have now
 do just fine?

I apologize if any or all of the questions have previously been
answered and are available somewhere on this site. I did some
snooping, but could not find answers such as these. Thanks for
 attention and help.
Terminology note: When you refer to burning your CD collection, you
should be saying ripping or extracting. Try the drive you have
before you buy anything else; EAC in Secure mode will let you know
whether or not there are problems. Assuming decent signal strength and
no excessive interference, even an 802.11b (as opposed to 802.11g)
wireless network will easily accommodate one or more streaming FLAC
files ripped from CD. I am supposing the drive you are looking at is an
external USB drive. In this case, it will be plugged into your laptop,
and your laptop will need to be on and running Slimserver in order for
you to be able to listen to your music collection.

Would be more interested in 88.2/96KHz support for those native file

I have music files that are natively 96KHz, and I'll add my voice to
