Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] New Squeezebox Touch Mod
ncarver;659227 Wrote: Finally got around to trying this mod. Created scripts to set and reset all the relevant rtpriorities, then sat with a (Linux) laptop and toggled the settings back and forth as desired while listening. Results: nothing at all. Not even the slightest hint of a possibility of there being a difference in the sound. Tried some very extreme settings and still heard no differences (except for when some made the Touch unresponsive so it had to be power cycled). For reference, I am streaming flac files from the server (SBS) via ethernet (wired), with the Touch connected via coax into a Wyred 4 Sound DAC-1. By comparison, I have found that most every digital cable I have tried between the Touch and DAC-1 affects the sound slightly (ah, but which one is correct??). Running top shows the Touch cpu is generally 75-80% idle while playing flac files, so I am not surprised that changing process priorities had no effect. Your W4S uses the same DAC as my Buffalo, ESS 9018. My findings are the same as yours - no difference. -- avr300 /avr300 avr300's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=21177 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89359 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

You (we) need to understand WHY IRQ priority of ANY process has any effect at all... there is at least one likely candidate explanation. (if you are using an external DAC) Try using Toslink instead of coax. Is anyone with a Benchmark or Lavry DAC able to test these mods? I'm using a Buffalo II DAC (http://www.twistedpearaudio.com/digital/buffalo.aspx) fully rigged with shunts and discreet output stage. To be honest I can't hear any difference, mod or not.
