[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: SB mod on not mod, what to expect vs CD player?
Loftprojection Wrote: Well when I'm talking about comparing the SB to CDP it's not as a transport only. I mean more like a stock of fully analog modified SB versus a CDP (transport/DAC). Like you I'm quite convinced that the SB as a transport with or without mods is probably a great tool that can match a lot of CDP as transport only if you have an external DAC. It's when you use the SB as a whole that I'm not sure it can compete with good CDP. My SB2 easily bested the sound quality of both my Sony CDP's 9000ES and 999ES...mid level units for sure, but I was really shocked at how noticeable an improvement the SB2 was. I sold both CDP's over the last 6 months and invested the $$$ in oop DCC discs on eBay. ;) -- hal9000 hal9000's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=983 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=23948 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

tyler_durden Wrote: You have a ground loop and no amount of power line filtering will eliminate it. The problem is that the cable-tv coax is grounded at one loction and the electric outlet ground is at another location. You don't need something to isolate the sub input. You need something to isolate the ground from either the sub amp (third wire on power line) or the coax line. The sub amp ground is there for safety and should not be lifted. The cable tv coax is another story. You need a 75 ohm isolation transformer that will break the DC connection between the coax ground and your audio/video system. Search for 75 Ohm isolation transformer and you'll find what you need. Of course, if your have a satellite receiver on that coax you need to be able to send DC to the LNA to tune the receiver. I think there are isolating transformers that solve that problem also. TD I am not an engineer so forgive me if I am misunderstanding...when I was referring to the coax cable I meant the subwoofer interconnect which I believe is a digital coax cable. Or are you saying that the coax cable my satellite tv receiver is hooked up to is causing a ground loop through my whole audio video system? the hum..The Hum..THE HUM! ack! -hal -- hal9000 hal9000's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=983 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21315 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

mamsterla Wrote: Tyler has the right idea. You have what is commonly known as a ground loop. What you need to do is to isolate which component is introducing the loop and eliminate it. Typically, your cable for cable tv is the biggest culprit. Can you keep everything together and then unplug the cable from the back of your receiver? Does the hum go away? If so, you need to get what Tyler described - an isolation transformer - Jensen makes some of the best, but they are pricey ~$100. Look here for more info: http://www.audioholics.com/techtips/setup/avhardware/groundloopcableTV.php lol this quote from your link pretty much sums it up for me Youve just connected your system and theres a buzz or hum that wont go away. It is unlikely that the subwoofer has a digital connection, that would mean it has its own DAC. What model/brand do you have, maybe I can find something. Or are you saying that the coax cable my satellite tv receiver is hooked up to is causing a ground loop through my whole audio video system? Ground loops are possible in either digital or analog, but usually they are analog. Of course, toslink optical eliminates ground loops.
