[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: SB mod on not mod, what to expect vs CD player?

Well when I'm talking about comparing the SB to CDP it's not as a
transport only. I mean more like a stock of fully analog modified SB
versus a CDP (transport/DAC). Like you I'm quite convinced that the SB
as a transport with or without mods is probably a great tool that can
match a lot of CDP as transport only if you have an external DAC.
It's when you use the SB as a whole that I'm not sure it can compete
 with good CDP.

My SB2 easily bested the sound quality of both my Sony CDP's 9000ES and
999ES...mid level units for sure, but I was really shocked at how
noticeable an improvement the SB2 was. I sold both CDP's over the last
6 months and invested the $$$ in oop DCC discs on eBay. ;)

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB is killing the SACD format! ;)

2006-02-26 Thread hal9000

SACD is the warmest sounding cd format I have heard. But...since really
getting in to SB and ripping my whole normal cd collection to FLAC my
small SACD collection has been gathering dust. So I was pretty bummed
to put my brilliant Sony DVP-NS999ES sacd player and SACD's up for sale
this afternoon.

My days of showing my friends how incredible the sacd sounds are
over...its all your fault Slim! Or...maybe it's Sony's damn fault for
inventing an amazing format that is locked down to hardware.

ps I am happy that I can reinvest the $$ in more MFSL and DCC cd's

My two systems...The familysys is the SB2 with the Sony STRDA7100ES
receiver, BA VR970 main speakers, BAVR10 center, Samsung 70 DLP,
Samsung Directv HDTV and TIVO and the CAVS Karaoke (god I suck at
singing). Monster THX cables end to end and the Monster 2000HKII power
supply.

The office sys has the SB2 hooked up to the Sony STRDA5ES, Axiom M22
Bookshelves, Axiom EP175 sub, Samsung Directv HDTV, Sony TIVO, and many
gaming consoles. Monster THX cables end to end and the Monster 2000HKII
power supply.

Definitely not audiophile quality...but close and it all sounds
incredible (now that my ground loop is stomped).

Tomorrow I am going to try to run the coax satellite cables through my
monster power cleaner (I have the coax cables connected direct to the
sat receiver from the wall atm) and see what happens..my hope is that
it will help since the power cleaner is grounded by the electrical
ground in my house.

I'll post the results.

ps it has been a challenge to get a sat installer to come out and help
with this issue...must be a tough thing to figure out/fix.

You have a ground loop and no amount of power line filtering will
 eliminate it.

The problem is that the cable-tv coax is grounded at one loction and
the electric outlet ground is at another location. You don't need
something to isolate the sub input. You need something to isolate the
ground from either the sub amp (third wire on power line) or the coax
line. The sub amp ground is there for safety and should not be lifted.
The cable tv coax is another story.

You need a 75 ohm isolation transformer that will break the DC
connection between the coax ground and your audio/video system.
Search for 75 Ohm isolation transformer and you'll find what you need.
Of course, if your have a satellite receiver on that coax you need to be
able to send DC to the LNA to tune the receiver. I think there are
isolating transformers that solve that problem also.

 TD

I am not an engineer so forgive me if I am misunderstanding...when I
was referring to the coax cable I meant the subwoofer interconnect
which I believe is a digital coax cable.

Or are you saying that the coax cable my satellite tv receiver is
hooked up to is causing a ground loop through my whole audio video
system?

Tyler has the right idea. You have what is commonly known as a ground
loop. What you need to do is to isolate which component is introducing
the loop and eliminate it. Typically, your cable for cable tv is the
biggest culprit. Can you keep everything together and then unplug the
cable from the back of your receiver? Does the hum go away? If so,
you need to get what Tyler described - an isolation transformer -
Jensen makes some of the best, but they are pricey ~$100. Look here
 for more info:

 http://www.audioholics.com/techtips/setup/avhardware/groundloopcableTV.php

lol this quote from your link pretty much sums it up for me

You’ve just connected your system and there’s a buzz or hum that won’t
go away. You’re running your gear through power conditioners and you’re
beating your head against the wall trying to figure out what’s up.
Congratulations - you've just entered The Ground Loop Zone...

I'm calling my satellite guy to install one of these Jensen
transformers..thanks for the link!

It is unlikely that the subwoofer has a digital connection, that would
mean it has its own DAC.

What model/brand do you have, maybe I can find something.

Or are you saying that the coax cable my satellite tv receiver is

Ground loops are possible in either digital or analog, but usually
they are analog. Of course, toslink optical eliminates
 ground loops.
