Actually Ralph I disagree, I think milled billet fronts and the like are a massive psychological boost to Audiophiles. As you would freely admit to yourself what we hear when using a HiFi is massively influenced by factors other than the actual science with our own prejudices and human failings having a disproportionate influence. To that end HiFi that looks, feels and smells like HiFi can be a big factor for lots of folks. Can we not reclaim the phrase Audiophile please. I consider myself to be one in so much as I care about my music sounding good, in this age of seeming low fidelity and most folks being happy with a standalone airplay or Bluetooth speaker I would say I'm definitely an Audiophile in comparison. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Car stereo with USB stick- off-topic maybe?
I'd say it depends on the head unit. In my experience most of them I've had have had some sort or weird limit or idiosyncratic behaviour. I've had a few USB capable aftermarket ones in various motors. A surprisingly large proportion have read the tags OK, but playback the tracks in whatever order they were copied to the stick, most infuriating, or have limits on either the number of folders or levels of folder they can cope with. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Car stereo with USB stick- off-topic maybe?
Well my Sony unit displays the number on the filename but ignores them for play order, even windows doesn't necessarily copy in the right order, I ended up using a small piece of software called copy in order, which was specifically made with that in mind. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What is really affecting the sound transmission?
Also bear in mind that the touch will be bit perfect unless you use the digital volume control, go to low and it can have a detrimental effect on the sound. I heard figures of ~75% and above being desirable. Personally I can't tell any difference down to about 50 if I increase the volume on my amp to compensate. I'm not going to open yet another can of worms with regard to DSD but I will say I personally think DSD is a con, any benefits are almost entirely down to the mastering and recording process, actually my opinions are the same for 24 bit vs 16bit as well. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What Would You Replace a Transporter With?
A Touch would be my first thought. If you were so inclined you could use a standalone DAC. Either connected by coax/optical or depending on the DAC by USB using Triodes EDO app. Using EDO also opens up the possibility of using bit rates higher than 96. Personally I think high res music is a pointless exercise but don't want to start yet another argument on the subject so will leave my opinions at that. Semantics maybe but FLAC is compressed as per my understanding of the term, the difference being lossy vs lossless.
