If I ever find myself in the position of needing a 4th SB3 for an application more demanding than my primary system, perhaps I will run this trial again. Or not! iPhone - sorry about the potential paradox. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Power supply A/B
I just hooked up 2 SB3s to my main system. One with an Elpac and one with stock. Just for the hell of it (please refer to this statement when you want to tear me apart!) I did notice that they sounded different. Source material: Norah Jones, Steely Dan, Larry Coryell. It took me a while (like 30 mins) to see what was going on. Of course, they both sounded fine, but I wanted to see if I could identify the specific differences. My first thought was the Elpac was producing a blacker background. My second thought was that the stock sounded pretty good. I began to enjoy the stock. It seemed like there was more information present, but eventually I began to think it was bright. The problem was, it seemed to present more information. So I started to identify instruments in my A/B. There it was. The soundstage with the Elpac was wider. The soundstage with the stock was more congested. All the information was present, it was just better spread out. The stock seemed to grab my attention with more concentrated music, but once I identified the issue, I liked the Elpac better. The stock seemed louder in comparision after I figured it out. I had a similar experience A/B-ing my high powered amp and my $300 yammy receiver... They both sound good, but there were small incremental differences that I slowly identified and around which I generated preferences. But now that I know the differences, I can spot them. (yes the big ol amp won out.) So the stock is now back in the bedroom, happily powering a great sounding pair of eras and the Elpac is in the main system. BTW - I got the Elpac with a 3rd used SB3. I had no intention of getting it. I just ended up with it. I am not going to recommend anyone go get an upgraded power supply. -- roll - gybe roll - gybe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8975 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47658 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

sorry - that would have helped. i got carried away... analog outs. both units playing the same playlist. both at 100% volume into different inputs of a musical fidelity a5 integrated. -- roll - gybe roll - gybe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8975 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47658 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

yes. make it a dbt. however, if i enlist my wife, then she will have good cause to think that i am nuts. if i bring in some strange gnome to change the inputs, then she will have good cause to think that i am nuts. -- roll - gybe roll - gybe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8975 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47658 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Ron Stewart;264883 Wrote: How about flatter frequency response? Take a look at SB3's frequency response as measured by Stereophile: http://www.stereophile.com/digitalprocessors/906slim/index3.html (Figure 1). Note how the response gradually falls below 600 Hz. Compare that to Stereophile's measurements of the popular Benchmark DAC1: http://stereophile.com/digitalprocessors/108bench/index4.html (Figure 1). The DAC1's response is noticeably flatter. It seems like those response differences might be audible, and might account for some of the improvements people have reported with external DACs. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] External DAC - what are the specific advantages?
I know this has been discussed many times, but I am specifically interested in the reasons why using an external DAC with an SB3 might yield an advantage. I'm not really interested in what different people might hear. I respect those thoughts, but I'm looking to investigate a different set of responses. For instance some types of responses that would be helpful: -A second power supply will do this, and this will help improve that -The chip in the SB3 DAC doesn't hold up to advancements made that are present in another chip. I'm not an engineer, so I think some of this has been covered in technical terms and some of it has been covered in subjective sonic terms. I'd really like to get the facts and be able to understand it! Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] External DAC - what are the specific advantages?
good thoughts. i think some of you guys catch my drift. By way of background, I have 3 systems with decent mid-fi speakers running flac and homeplugs. One system has a killer amp in case I ever upgrade. SB3 linear psu - Musical Fidelity a5 - Swan 6.1 (recently demoed Thiel 3.6s and didn't think there was much improvement). Very bright/huge room, have to deal with a rear wall. Analog. One system is a 5.1 with a receiver - mantown, so I end up listening down there a lot. SB# - Yamy - Vandy 1. 2500cft, with an open rear. Coax One system is a bookshelf bedroom system with some era 4s. Damper room. Analog I understand I can color the sound with components, but so much has to do with the room. When people say that the image is better or the soundstage is larger with a larvy or benchmark, is that just coloration? Or are the components superior? If the components are superior, then why? I am not trying to tear down any arguments - I'm trying to justify going down this route more than anything, and I would really like to add some objective information. I do believe there are sonic differences in gear. I've tried the MF amp in the other rooms and it is more laid back in the mids and way tighter in the bass. So, I totally appreciate that you have to try gear and listen to it. It's just that there are a lot of ways to make your music sound different, and they don't all cost a grand. -- roll - gybe roll - gybe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8975 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42961 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
