Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] The Blind Testing Controversy

2009-03-30 Thread swhite58

Excuse me for straying a little from the topic, but this dicussion
reminds me of one I had on a forum run by a Canadian speaker
manufacturer with a name starting with A.

The concensus on that forum seems to be that because any modern
amplifier has a flat frequency response, and inaudible harmonic
distortion, than all amps sound the same. It doesn't matter how much
they cost or the qauality of the components, they are all the same,
except that some are louder.

Amps don't 'sound', they amplify I was told. Clearly in the If you
can't measure it, it doesn't exist camp.

I suspect hundreds of amp manufacturers might have a problem with this
concept.

On reflection, perhaps I'm not as far off topic as I thought :)

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] The Sizzling Sound of Music

2009-03-17 Thread swhite58

The empahasis among the younger people I know seems to be convenience
and sheer quantity of music over sound quality. There are exceptions
though. My oldest son (23) doesn't care a fig about quality, and he
keeps asking ME to turn it down (and no I'm not going deaf). However,
my youngest son (19) commented that my new DAC sounded better than the
one in the SB3 without even being asked.

I grew up with cassettes, and the measure of a good recording (and a
good player) was how much top end it had. I sometimes think that I
still have that mindset deep down, when I hear that mp3 sizzle and
actually like it in some strange way.

The comments on the article are fascinating. They really illustrate the
point that the best sound is the sound you like the best. Why else do
valve amps exist?

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Finally bought some new speakers

2008-11-18 Thread swhite58

A while ago I asked this forum for their wiews on a few bookshelf
speakers I had auditioned (Dynaudio, Quad, etc), priced at around $1000
Australian. Since then, my budget, not much to start with, has halved
(having teenage children does that).

Anyhow, I'm pleased to report that I finally bought someting - the
Usher S-520. See
http://www.usheraudiousa.com/products/loudspeakers/usher-series/s-520-shielded

I haven't heard much hi-end stuff, so I'm probably easy to impress, but
these speakers are stunning. The best thing about them is a really
smooth natural midrange. I can listen to them all day :)

Does anyone else have them, or any other Ushers?

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Been listening to some bookshelf speakers

2008-04-06 Thread swhite58

I'm in the market for new speakers so on friday I listened to the
following:

Elac BS123
Quad 11L (they didn't have the 12L in stock)
Dynaudio Audience 52
Energy RC-10

I didn't like the Energys much, the Elacs were good, the Quads better,
but the Dynaudios were the clear winner, with a very smmoth, natural
midrange and top end. I'm interested in hearing the Quad 12L when they
arrive, to see if they are significantly better than the 11L.

Has anyone heard or owned any of these speakers?

The 3020B was by far the best of the 3020 series, I had one for years
and now my friend has it as his main amp - I bought mine in 1983!

Pity the 3020B isn't one of the ones for sale.

Of course, I could always just get a T-amp :)

Speaking of all-in-one units like the Olive, does anyone have any
experience of the Cambridge Audio offering? Just curious.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Longevity and getting old stuff serviced

2007-04-18 Thread swhite58

I have a Luman L4 amp that I bought in 1980, which I'm pretty sure I can
still get repaired by at least one hifi dealer here in Perth.

I'm sure there are lots of better amps around, but I suspect I'd have
to spend serious money to get much improvement.

This has been a highly entertaining thread. Anyone who has stood on

 reproduction chain

I may not know much but I know I'm partial to an E major chord through
a stack of Marshalls - from a recent Al Stewart album.

2006-05-11 Thread swhite58

Good point - it's all rather old. The leads and speaker (monster) cable
are as old as the amp - a Luxman L4 I bought in 1980. I'll check and
maybe replace them.

You CD player must have been seriously broken!

I havn't played any piano music yet :) I must admit that some are
192kbps. Anyhow it's a lot better than my prvious media player - an
old PC with a Soundblaster Live.

The better DACs etc in the SB2/3 would be nice but I can't justify the
cost ATM.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] It's all in the DACs

2006-05-08 Thread swhite58

I recently bought an SB1 on Ebay and discovered something that may well
be obvious to many of you. If I rip a CD to a (lossy) 128Kb/sec mp3
and play it through the SB it sounds significantly better than the
original CD played through my rather old low-end Yamaha CD player using
the same amp and speakers. I guess the DACs in the SB1 are streets
ahead of those in the Yamaha.

Which leads me to the question - How do the DACs in the SB1 compare to
those in the SB2/3 ?

Thanks

Shane
