Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Arcam Solo Movie 2.1
Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Yes, you're probably all right about fixing the NAS problem... it's just a bit tricky to do! I thought of sticking it in another room with a wifi link, but because of the large files I move around to and from it (I take high res RAW photographs) the wifi won't be the best option. And a cable from the living room to another room is a bit difficult because I'm renting, so can't drill through walls. And now my amp has died -- I think the smoothing capacitor has gone -- so I have no choice but to get a new amp now. Ho hum - back to the drawing board! Thanks again. -- marksw marksw's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15309 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43024 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

You might want to consider homeplugs instead of relying on wifi, if you want to move the NAS and need good throughput. -- sebage http://www.last.fm/user/sebage/ SB3 - Bel Canto S300 - BW 703 sebage's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2617 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43024 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

marksw;265242 Wrote: I don't watch many films Don't buy a device primarily suited to films then! :) I can't help directly as I don't know the RS6s. However, it seems that your problems are caused by a noisy NAS, which is not going to be solved by a Solo Movie, and by an inadequate amp, which is unlikely to be improved upon massively by a 5.1 amp with DSP. So I'd fix the noise problem - either remove from the room, encase or replace. Then fix the amp problem - and I would recommend considering valves if you like jazz and classical. -- adamslim Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others SB+, EAR V20, Living Voice OBX-R2s plus some other stuff SB3, Charlize, Harbeth HL-P3ES adamslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7355 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43024 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Build some kind of noise barrier around the NAS. Maybe just drop an insulated cooler over it when listening. Good luck on the amp search. -- Pale Blue Ego Pale Blue Ego's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=110 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43024 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Arcam Solo Movie 2.1
Hello everyone, I've been looking to upgrade my amp (a very old NAD 310) for some time, and was hoping that some of you could give me your opinions? I got an SB3 a few months ago and since then I've found myself spending many an evening sitting on the floor going through music I've not listened to in years... (long story not worth going into here). Anyway, I picked up some Monitor Audio Silver RS6's last month. Although the NAD drives them, it doesn't have the attack I like in some music. (I generally listen to jazz and classical, and the faster paced works seem to be missing a bit of life.) So I've been trying to make a short list of amps to listen too (it's going to be a few months before I have the cash saved), and I'm suffering from a lot of indecisiveness! At first I thought I'd spend about 500 GBP on an amp, but living with the NAS (file server/media server) in the same room as the speakers I've actually started listening to music through my DVD player (don't laugh). I'm doing this because the NAS is quite noisy, and I don't have the option of moving it out of the room. Playing CDs through my DVD player (a Denon 1740) gives me a nicer experience in the evening. Right, this is a longer post than I was expecting... but I hope you're understanding where I'm coming from! Because of the above reasons I thought it would be good to get a CD player, and I wanted to get a same brand amp and CD player so that I don't have loads of remotes lying around. So looking around I thought maybe Cyrus because they're small, but apparently not a good match for the speakers I have. I then came across the Arcam Solo Music which seemed like a brilliant idea. It has DAB built in, and is a very good CD player/amp combo. I was a little disappointed that it didn't have a digital in, as I thought that could squeeze a bit more out of the SB. So that led me in the direction of the Solo Movie 2.1. I don't watch many films (especially since I got my SB), but the benefit of this is that it gets rid of my DVD player too, meaning less clutter. So the question I have are: 1. First, will the RS6's be a good match for the Solo 2.1? 2. Is the Solo 2.1 good at playing music and will it sound good through my speakers? 3. What is the DAC like? Is it worth worrying about using this for the SB? 4. Do you have any suggestions for what would be a good match for the speakers given the sort of music I like (jazz and classical)? My primary concern is music as I don't watch enough TV/films to worry about that side of things -- I'm just thinking it would be nice to get rid of all the cables and boxes under my TV. Sorry for the long post - any pointers would be useful! And I will be doing an audition - I just need a short list to give me somewhere to start! marksw;265242 Wrote: Sorry for the long post - any pointers would be useful! Mark Interesting one Mark! First point before any other, if the NAS is preventing you from using the SB3 then move the NAS. Obviously it bothers you so bite the bullet. Once you've done that you can use the SB3 as your main source for music (IMO it's a good source) and right there you've saved the money for a decent CD player. That just leaves the movie side of things. Sounds like you have a DVD player already. With the money you saved on the CD player buy a new amp if you like. Before you do that: 1. Look at your speaker placement and room acoustics. 2. Check out the Inguz plugin for slimserver/squeezecenter. It may be that the room acoustics or speaker/room interactions are the source of the problems you're hearing. Certainly, you should make sure these are optimised before moving on to the amp. A flatter frequency response (however this is achieved) seems to unlock the sound quality potential of a system in other ways too. IMO it's the first thing to improve. Why not look to the emotiva product line (www.emotiva.com) Downside is that you have to order factory direct from the U.S. but price/performance wise these products should be interesting, combined with high level customer service. I have some experience with U.S. shops like av123 and bluejeanscable, only positive experiences From what I hear, emotiva customer service is also second to none Regards Harald N -- haraldo Suse Linux - SB3 - Benchmark DAC1 - Krell KAV400xi - Meadowlark Kestrel2 Everything is difficult before it's easy haraldo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13472 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43024 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
