Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Best method of connection for SB Classic to AMP
I have just move my Arcam Alpha 7 into the living room and now have my sb3 conected via RCA. Noticeable improvement, epspecially in base. My quandry is this, my front two speakers wharfdale diamond 9.1s are now plugged into the Arcam. I still want to use them for my front lr channels in my 5.1 setup. As i don't watch movies as frequently as listening to audio i intend to just swap the speaker cable between the 2 amps. Is this ok to do ? Is there a more convenient method without sacrificing the quality. I eventually intend to replace the 5.1 existing amp with a soundar solution. Possibly the Yamaha 30d for it's HDMI connection. Any thoughts ? I know the true surround will be missing. -- tank121 tank121's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17169 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46921 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Best method of connection for SB Classic to AMP
I've got two SB3 rigs (city apt and weekend cabin). In the city, I've used an old but excellent Adcom DAC to feed the SB digital output to my Consonance int amp. In the country, the SB3 feeds into the digital input of my Musical Fidelity CD/Pre24 into a Quad 909. In both cases, I like the digital output better than the SB's analogue ones -- not night and day, but enough to be worthwhile. -- peterdlederer peterdlederer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7066 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46921 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Best method of connection for SB Classic to AMP
Thanks again Bigfool. Squeezebox is now connected via QED Qunex 1 rca cables to the rca inputs on the amp and sounds pretty good. I take then that this doesn't say a lot for the DAV installed in my Sony STR-DG910 (sounded tinny). Anyone know what DAC is inside it ? I take it when i move house and connect it up via the Acram Alpha 7 via RCA it will sound even better ? -- tank121 tank121's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17169 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46921 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

believe the best way to connect up is using rca cables, is this correct ? If so i have two in mind - IXOS XHA215 QED Qunex 1 Your thoughts please, would i notice a big difference in quality between these two cables. Initially i will be connecting this into my Sony STR-DG910 amp. At a later date probably my Arcam Alpha 7 Edit/Delete Message -- tank121 tank121's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17169 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46921 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Best method of connection for SB Classic to AMP
Being a home cinema amp, it has digital inputs as well as analogue. You can therefore use either stereo RCAs, in which case you use the SB3's DAC and should put your amp in analogue direct mode, or you can use a digital coax cable (also will be RCA, but is a different cable design), in which case you will be using the DAC in your amp. The Arcam amp will only work in analogue (i.e. the former). The best sound? Whichever sounds best! Not trying to be facetious, but it really is down to you which you prefer, there's unlikely to be an absolute winner. In your situation I would go to http://www.bluejeanscable.com/ and get a stereo audio cable and a digital audio one. They're all decent and great value, and it'll allow you to see which you prefer without spending serious money. -- adamslim Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others SB+, EAR V20, Living Voice OBX-R2s plus some other stuff SB3, Charlize, Harbeth HL-P3ES adamslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7355 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46921 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Best method of connection for SB Classic to AMP
If you are using bass management on your home cinema amp, then using the digital out of the SB is the way to go. The reason is that when you use bass management, all analogue signals are digitised so that the bass management software can work on them, and then re-converted to analogue. If, however you are going to use the analogue-in in direct mode, it would be a good idea to try both the analogue and the digital outputs, and see which you prefer. -- bigfool1956 David Ayers Music is what counts, hifi just helps us enjoy it more bigfool1956's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13782 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46921 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Bigfool1956 thanks for your prompt reply. I have posted a link to the manual, don't know if it does bass management. Can you have a quick gander and point a newbie in the right direction ? http://pdf.crse.com/manuals/3094430311.pdf Thanks in advance. -- tank121 tank121's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17169 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46921 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Best method of connection for SB Classic to AMP
The answer to your question lies in the way you are using your speakers. If you have small front speakers, and are using the sub-woofer to augment the bass, then you are using the bass management of the amp to do this. If, however, you have large front speakers, and are just using the sub for LFE, then you don't need bass management for stereo. With your amp, if you use the Stereo mode, and/or the Direct mode you will be using solely the front pair of speakers. Try it out using a CD. If it sounds good, then your speakers are up to the job, then the analogue out of the SB may be the best option, although you should compare it with the digital out to see what you think. If, in Stereo mode, it sounds very tinny, and lacking in bass, then you need the bass management, in which case use the digital out of the SB. -- bigfool1956 David Ayers Music is what counts, hifi just helps us enjoy it more bigfool1956's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13782 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46921 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
