You can use external converters or up/down samplers (e.g. Inguz
plug-in, APE decoder, flac, sox, etc) with SlimServer if you want.
Check Settings - Advanced - File Types. (What is Windows equivalent
of convert.conf, BTW?) But unless specifically tweaked or asked no
Windows audio libs are used.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Best sound possible

2008-01-29 Thread hshrader

Given recent discussions in Absolute Sound regarding audio signals
generated from a Hard Drive, I am wondering if the Squeezebox is
producing the best sound possible when installed as recommended.

Effectively, I have my music files on my hard drive which are managed
by Slim Server software. This software communicates with and sends the
files over the home wireless network to the Squeezebox that forwards it
to a DAC for analogue conversation.

Is this the best I can do? It seems that there is some concern to get
the best sound quality possible, one needs to manage/configure/bypass
Window’s kernel mixer, “If the music server can only be used with
standard system drivers (XP k-mixer), then the sound quality will be
limited to mid-fi [at best.” (Absolute Sound) A Stereophile article
says: If the PC (specifically the XP K-mixer DLL) is not forced to do
sample-rate conversion, it can maintain bit-transparent operations.
This implies that if it does sample rate-conversion you don’t get
bit-transparent operations.

Am I taking this information out of context to my application of PC
server based music. Has anyone any views or experience with these
issues as they relate to Squeezebox?

Many thanks,
Hans

Yeah I have. Are those two quote from articles discussing the
SlimServer and a SqueezeBox or Transporter?

If they are, then that don't have a clue what they are speaking about.
If it was me, I wouldn't bother reading them in the future.

Yes, you are. With the Squeezebox the server's audio system isn't
involved in any way.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Best sound possible

2008-01-29 Thread hshrader

Thank you JJZolx.

Funkstar: the articles are related to PC based music servers but not
specifically squeezebox products. As it was, the TAS article (Dec 07 i
think) talked about managing output from your PC without use of
thirdparty products like a squeezebox (PC to DAC to Speakers). In
essence very interesting to someone managing their music using a PC.
Nonetheless, it is unclear to me how that article relates, if at all,
to squeezebox applications. JJZolx says it does not.

Other views that will support JJZolx and Funkstar's views or perhaps
there is dissent?

SlimDevices products do not rely on managing [audio] output from a PC.
The article does not apply here.

2008-01-29 Thread Mark Lanctot

Just to reinforce what's being said here, the audio data is being
transmitted to the SB/TP as a computer file. The SB does the decoding.
It's the same process as file transfers within a computer network.

The OS's audio system isn't involved in the slightest - the data is
treated as data, not audio, and it's out of the picture.

There is really no need to belabor this. The SB or Transporter receives
network packets from the SlimServer that make up the music file (FLAC,
MP3, WAV, or other natively suppported format). The SB or Transporter
plays the file. The server has to get the data there, but it has
nothing to do with the quality of the music.

Hi,

unlike the 'audiophilia', this isn't a matter of 'believe' or 'view' or
'opinion'. Rather it's about cold technical facts. SB concept doesn't
include PC sound devices at any point.

The sound stage will open up, bass will tighten and the imaging will
improve. DVD performance will also increase substantially.

If you were to download a CD from the internet, would you worry about
the sound card in the server you downloaded the file from?

If not, then don't worry about the one in the PC that's sending music
to the squeezebox.
