funny, i came here wondering whether it was still for sale. if so, i'm definitely interested. i have two "standard" transporters, and have recently purchased a tube integrated (that has a lovely 274B rectifier). in any case, if you're still here, and it's still available, send me a note. -- 4 TB Drobo-->FW 800-->mac mini-->Ethernet Transporter--> Wireworld Eclipse 6 coax-->Meridian G61 G61--> Nordost Red Dawn-->Primare 30.3 Primare-->Ocos--Vienna Acoustics Beethoven/Maestro netchord's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=21002 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=104936 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] For Sale: Transport fully modded Modwright Platinum Signature
While I am complete agreement about there being no need to add tubes to the Transporter, I nonetheless respect the OP's right to post the For Sale ad here in the Audiophile section. There is no need to call out how adding tubes does not improve the sound, that's between the buyer and seller and if one is not going to buy the unit then just walk away quietly. The questions a perspective buyer should be asking are those pertaining to wear and tear, shipping methods and cost, etc. Whatever one feels about use of tubes should not be part of this discussion. I look at this types of discussions as very similar to discussions about music. I like free jazz and dislike heavy metal rock and since I hate it when someone leave a post on thread about free jazz saying "This music sounds like crap", I refrain from post the same on a thread heavy metal rock. I realize that this may sound strange coming from me, the number one abuser of all those high end audio gurus who write and edit the gloss audio magazines, but every private individual is entitled to their beliefs, no matter how mistaken one may feel they are, whereas on the other hand the self appointed audio gurus who spread FUD for the sake of money are fair game. As this is a sales tread . Is the original components retained so that the player can be restored to it's original configuration . that would actually increase prospective customers ? Tubes is not automatically considered "best" even among card carrying audiophiles . Many would actually considered the product "broken" if its to modified . I had a similar problem selling a modified DAC 15 years ago, many second hand byers simply wanted it in it's original form (in hindsight it was not the best idea to modify it ) . The transporter is still a classic . it would still be a collectible if it where original . I have no use for it in any of my current setups (in the main hifi i use digital in/out and in secondary locations its to big ) Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 MeridianG98DH 2 x MeridianDSP5200 MeridianDSP5200HC 2 xMeridianDSP3100 +Rel Stadium 3 sub. Here's a couple of interesting articles about tube rectifiers as used in audio circuits: http://www.soldano.com/amp-help/tube-vs-solid-state-rectifiers/ http://www.guitarplayer.com/amplifiers/1017/whats-the-big-deal-about-tube-rectifiers/23811 Basically, tubes completely suck at being good rectifiers. They cause voltage and current sags. This might be a good thing for a guitar amp, but for a line source it's going to make things sound like shit. But, given the good PSU design of the Transporter, I'm guessing there's enough capacitor to deal with the sags and you won't hear any difference at all. All you're left with is the warmth and glowing of the placebo effect. Appropriate low cost semiconductor rectifiers predated the more complex appropriate transistors by quite a few years. Tube rectifiers were supplanted in two steps - first by the fairly limited selenium rectifiers, and then by more capable silicon diodes. > > I agree - that is why I asked what any possible benefits could be based > on. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] For Sale: Transport fully modded Modwright Platinum Signature
Asking $1300 I feel the value of this unit far excedes $1300 but as always market conditions prevail. I will entertain all offers. If someone has been on the fence on one of these fine units...this one comes with a nice collection of tubes. This is the latest edition ModWright Transporter with full Signature Platinum Truth upgrades in perfect operational and cosmetic condition. Im the original owner purchased directly from ModWright. I have original packaging as I received form Modwright. I have original TP manual as well as the manual I got from MW. It has been lightly used in a dedicated music room in a clean and non smoking home. The ModWright version is a substantial upgrade adding an oversized toroidal transformer and a complete re-design of the analog stage using two output tubes. The tube output stage features an internal, tube rectified power supply based on the technology from ModWright preamplifiers. RCA and balanced outputs are now sourced from the new analog stage. The balanced outputs utilize custom wound output transformers from Electroprint. The RCA output connectors are upgraded from stock. The output stage produces output levels sufficient to drive most amplifiers directly without a preamp. Audiogon add https://app.audiogon.com/listings/transports-logitech-modwright-transporter-platinum-signature-truth-with-extras-2016-01-01-digital-66216-shawnee-ks I will sell direct with the right buyer scp2's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32359 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=104936 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
