[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] New Transporter vs Old Transporter

2007-10-23 Thread sjparsons

I bought my first TP in Feb 2007. I was very impressed. It was good
enough for me to retire my Modified Pioneer PD-91 to the bottom shelf
and let the kids play Barney music on it. The background was deathly
quiet and the player dynamic and engaging...it had some life to it.
Unfortunately the TP went blank after a few months and would not power
up.

I sent it back to Slimdevices and they quickly sent me a new TP with a
new power supply that they said was more reliable.

This new TP worked very nicely but it lacked dynamics and was not
engaging. The music was just dead. It had clarity but no life no punch.
I was disappointed. Even my wife commented that the PD-91 sounded better
then the new TP. The fact that my wife could tell any difference was
astonishing.

This TP also died a few months later but for other unrelated reasons.
In fact it turned out to be the fault of my ISP, the TP was unable to
establish its web address and would shut down. I interpreted the TP
shut down as another failure and sent it back to Slimdevices.

They were kind enough to send me another TP, though this one was a
factory refurb, on account of the fact that there was nothing wrong
with the one I just sent back.

This refurbed TP has the newer powersupply and I was told that that is
the only change from the early TP that I had back in Feb.

Unfortunately this TP sounds dead also. I feel like I am playing
elevator music in my house all the time. While it sounds decent there
is nothing dynamic going on and it is not engaging.

I still love the concept of networked music and I got extra points from
my wife for getting 600 cd's out of our living room, I just want it to
sound engaging enough to keep me listening.

Also I noticed that some of the early TP reviews were better then the
newer reviews. I would like to see Stereophile revisit the TP that they
are selling now to see if they can hear it too. Has anyone else
experienced the difference between the old TP and the new TP?

If it matters to anyone I have been playing all the TP's and the PD-91
through this equipment:

Sumo Artemis preamp with matching separate power supply.
Classe CA-201 two channel power amp
Kef reference 105-3 speakers
Custom interconnects and speaker wire.
I use the RCA outputs and all the source devices.

The Classe CA-201 does not sound as good as the Warner Imaging VTI
Monoblock 300's that I had before but one of them died and could not be
fixed so tried out the Classe CA-201.

The power supply change they made was for the display board on the front
of the unit. It powers the two VFDs and the knob. The audio section
has it's own power supply that is fully isolated from the display
board. This has not changed at all.

Great! This is how a new market for vintage audiophile gear is created.
Some guy claims his old one was better then a new one and the
result is bidding wars on ebay for the old ones.

Dope fiends call this chasing the dragon. With every successive use
of the drug you try to recapture the feeling from that first time but
you keep getting farther from it.

Haunyack;

I am also in Hood River. If you have time please come over and give it
a listen. I would value your opinion. Also if you are interested we
could compare the TP's side by side.

If interested please send me a private email with your contact info.

Haunyack- Do give a holler if in the Gorge.

The Sumo does have xlr balanced inputs. In your experience does the TP
sound better using these? It would be a good excuse for me to buy some
new cables.

Snarlydwarf- just down I5 in Springtucky. Would that be Springfield?
If so you have you have your choice between Medford pears and Hood
River pears.
