That cheap? It's worth the experiment. M-Audio makes high quality pro
gear that, unlike Behringer, is meant to last.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: M-audio SuperDAC with SB3

2006-12-09 Thread Fifer

I have an M-Audio 2496 SuperDAC. I originally bought it to use with my
SB1 and found it to be a significant improvement over the SB1's
internal DACs. When I upgraded to the SB2, I wasn't so convinced there
was much in it between the SB2 and the M-Audio so I haven't been using
it. I've just taken delivery of a Transporter so I really should eBay
the M-Audio (and the SB1).

I'd have to agree with HighDugeon about M-audio products being built to
last. My Delta-66 (24/96 digital recording system, Breakout Box+PCI
Soundcard) is the oldest piece of Computer hardware I own. It was
bought in the late '90s and is in its 4th or 5th PC--Working Perfectly.

Talking about DACs, is there a way to force DAC to recognize digital
signal from the optical output of your everyday's DVD player?

Sure, just set it to PCM.

Hi, I have an opportunity to get this DAC. Anybody care to comment on
would there be any significant improvement over SB3's analog output.
Can't demo it, so I have to relay on your ears :)...

I have a large collection of DAC's, including audiophile, professional,
and NOS versions - so I have a little experience with this subject
(although definitely not as much as some others around here).

The M-Audio SuperDAC 24/96 is, easily, one of the finest sounding DACs
I've ever heard to date. You are lucky to get one of these, as I
believe they have been out of production for a while now.

I never expected the M-Audio SuperDAC to be as good as it turned out to
actually be. As a pro-audio piece, it wasn't really very expensive at
all when it was being made, and its included power supply was a rather
smallish external wall-wart style. But its sound is just outstanding,
and the equal of any other DAC I've heard so far.

It's a true 24-bit 96kHz DAC too, so it will receive the 24-bit S/PDIF
output from the SB3 and retain full resolution when the SB3 digital
volume control is used. It uses the AKM4593 DAC chip which is
outstanding. While both optical and coaxial connections from the SB3
sound great with this DAC, I've found the optical connection sounds
best.

If you have an upsampler to use in-between the SB3 and SuperDAC, you
might find an even nicer resulting sound. I use a GW Labs DSP, which
IMO is the perfect complement to the SuperDAC.

Advice: When you get this DAC, don't let it go! It is one of the really
special DAC units out there, and while it was a hot item in the modding
community for a while, it also sounds fantastic stock. Enjoy!
