I think Sean meant that because the Transporter utilises ultra low
noise circuitry and super-regulators, the advantage might be lost
introducing a converter at the amplifier end which was not similarly
low-noise.

Depending on the devices at each end, very long! 100foot plus is fine
with good quality cable, connectors and most important is the design of
the devices at each end. Sound reinforcement snake cables can be
hundreds of feet long connecting very high end mics and mixing boards
with high noise rejection. Proaudio sound reinforcement websites can
give you a more scientific answer. I would not worry about 50 feet
though. I have several 50 foot runs and total silence when recording in
the house and my recording equipment is not SOTA by far.

Consider using balanced headphones. I saw this ad in Stereophile this
month.
http://www.headphone.com/guide/by-headphone-type/balanced-type/
They can modify certain popular headphones into balanced drive too,
with cable length listed up to 20 feet, (mod=$400) but you might be
able to get longer. Then you could use internal volume control from
Transporter?

You could also use a pro audio 2 channel mic preamp with headphone
output: http://www.presonus.com/mp20.html but might be overkill and not
sure about the headphone amp which is not an important feature on this
box. Might be some other pro sound options if you look carefully, my
quick search didn't find any gold nuggets. You are paying for the
balanced amplifier stage which you will not use at all!

Or, why not build your own balanced headohone amp, good sound @much
less $! Great designs here, with PCBs:

I hope you're enjoying the new Transporter. I'm hoping Santa will bring
me one.

Thanks Rich. It hasn't arrived yet as UK orders aren't shipping yet
apparently. I'm just planning ahead.

Thanks for the links. My current headphone amp was a DIY kit which had
options for either a balanced input module or to be converted into a
full balanced amp for balanced headphones (which I could do with my
Sennheiser HD650s). Unfortunately, the company producing the amp kit is
no longer in business. I'll have a look at the designs in your links.

I can't answer the balanced: how-long question or the converter
question, but in terms of controlling the Transporter from the SB2, you
don't need to sync. You can Felix Mueller's ShadowPlay plug-in:
http://www.gwendesign.com/slimserver/dev_software.htm

I'm using it now to control my Transporter from a couple of SB3s.
Works great!

Notwithstanding the educational value of trying it, unless your
headphone amp has balanced inputs, it's probably not a good idea to use
the balanced outputs. You would need a _very_ low noise active balun
circuit (super regs etc) in order to approach what's coming from
transporters RCA outputs. However, if you're picking up a ton of noise
due to having an unbalanced run, then maybe look into it.

Thanks Sean and gharris. There was a balanced input option for my
headphone amp but I'm not sure if it is still available (the amp was a
low volume DIY kit and the designer is no longer in business). However,
in case I can track one down, I'd still like to know what the maximum
practical cable length is?
