Not quite. Speakers with digital inputs plus built-in D/A converters
and power amps do exist: Meridian make quite a few models. However, my
ATCs have built in amps but take a balanced analogue signal. Quite a
lot of studio monitors are like this. Therefore the TP's XLR analogue
outputs are connected directly to the speakers (via the aforementioned
passive attenuators).

Wow, I wasn't aware speakers like that existed, so you're saying you
send a digital stream from the TP to the speakers and the speakers have
built in amps ?

My setup is very straightforward. Analog outputs into my preamp.

At one time I had my original Rega Planet's digital out going into the
Transporter for use as an outboard DAC. Source switching, though, just
wasn't very convenient with the Transporter, and firmware bugs made it
unreliable and a PITA to recover from whenever it went into the weeds.

Well, the picture still goes to the TV :-)

Since the speakers are directly connected to the TP, the only way to
get a signal to them is via the TP. That was the whole point of buying
the TP in the first place: to use it as a digital preamp. (Discovering
that it sounded better than the SB2 it replaced by an even greater
margin than I anticipated was icing on the cake).

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter usage

2008-10-07 Thread Rodney_Gold

I have used mine via xlr into ATC SCM50a actives and via rca into a
headphone amp simultaneously. Currently just being used as a
digital front end into a pair of Meridian DSP 5500's.
I did also use a Z-sys RDP-1 digital pre/parametric eq between its
SPDIF out and dac and have plans to try to get the TACT room correction
system working right when I set up the ATC's again. (I have closeted em)

Interesting, what advantage is there pushing the DVD through the TP as
opposed to direct to the TV ?

My Transporter is directly connected to a pair of ATC SCM100A active
monitors, via 13dB passive attenuators, using the balanaced outputs.

On the input side, I have a Topfield PVR on the Toslink input and a
Cambridge Audio DVD player on the BNC SPDIF input - the Transporter is
used as a digital preamp.
