I just struck me that I haven't seen any postings from Phil for a while, so I did a quick search and found his last post was on 23rd Nov. I always enjoy his non-nonsense contributions. Are you still around, Phil? Are you OK? Phil, glad to see you're about and indeed alive! On the general topic, audio has been a journey for me so far. I used to be a raving subjectivist but now I not. Every time I listen, or see other people listening, without knowing which player (or even speaker!) they're listening to, I become a bit more humble about this game, my gear, my hearing ability etc! I see many parallels between hifi and cars. For both, there are many aspects to performance. These aspects are useful in different situations. So the answer to which is a better car? is complicated. And even when a Ferrari is clearly quicker than Golf GTi, it doesn't help if you live in central London or on a farm. I understand completely those who have multiple systems for different moods and genres. But even taken on an all-round basis, spending x10 on a system most definitely doesn't improve the sound x10. Maybe for a minority of recordings you will appreciate a difference and that's worth it because we're audio nuts. The main point is, in most cases the real, meaningful improvements would be those in room acoustics but for almost all of us a custom built room is impossible. And for most of us even basic treatments are out for domestic reasons. That leaves recordings. It's worth spending on better masters of your favourite music. This is going to give you big improvements in a practical fashion. It's about perspective!
