I'll acquiesce to the manufacturer and leave it on as they seem to think it makes a difference also. Regardless, I think I'll be reselling it. It's nice sounding but takes up a bit more room & space is a commodity to me right now. -- kphinney SB3 Zhaolu D2.5 JoLida 102B Omega Grand 6's & B&W 602 S2's AKG K501 kphinney's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10409 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35975 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Seriously, it's more likely your ears that are "warming up" (they vary over time WAY more than the electronics). I have a ton of Meridian gear (including 26 channels of Meridian DACs) and it sounds the same stone cold or warm. I even have X10 switches on everything to shut things down stone cold when not in use. -- mswlogo Thinkpad XP SS > Cat5 > SB3 > SPDIF-COAX > Meridian 861V4 (Trifield, Room corrected, Upsampled) > DSP5500 Mains, DSP5500HC Center, DSP33 Rears mswlogo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9090 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35975 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Will a Meridian 556 enhance the SB3?
The Meridian 566.20 gives an improved depth to the music that is most noticeable with classical and Jewel (don't ask - wife's pick) while not noticeable with some of the female vocalists I prefer. Norah Jones didn't even get a minor bump. In the spirit of full disclosure I am still breaking in the Omega speaker (Fostex drivers). The 566 definitely sounds better after it has been left on for a while. Something I didn't have the luxury of doing when I demo'd it. A comparison now may give better results. kphinney wrote: > Sorry for the confusion Pat. A little typo, which I fixed in my posts. > I'm considering the Meridian 566. Oh, that is totally different. Their 566 DAC is very old, the data sheet is from 1996. http://www.meridian-audio.com/data/566.pdf If it is cheap enough, it might be worth a flyer. But DACs get better with Moore's law. maybe not doubling every two years, but getting significantly better. While Meridian stuff is well engineered and expensive originaly, I would not expect something that ancient to be much of an improvement. A used Benchmark DAC-1, on the other hand, sounded much better than my SqueezeBox. I used it until I got my Transporter. Both the Meridian and the Benchmark have fairly stable prices these days so you could buy one, listen for a month, and sell it if you are not in love, without losing much money. -- Pat http://www.pfarrell.com/music/slimserver/slimsoftware.html ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Will a Meridian 556 enhance the SB3?
I had a Meridian 566 (20-bit, IIRC; might have been 24). It's a reasonable DAC, and I understand that it can be modded for good improvement. I have not compared it directly to my SB3, as I sold it about 4 years ago. I did compare it to the Shanling CD-T100 - I bought the Shanling and sold the 566. The Shanling also sounds comfortably better than the stock SB3, although not as good as my SB+. The 566 has a fairly delicate, warm sound. It's nice, but I never found it that engaging (no PRaT). The stock SB3 I would describe as fairly punchy, but again not that engaging - it lacks the detail and resolution to sound real enough, to me. Therefore, if you're looking for a more detailed sound, and to remove some of the 'rough edges' off the SB3, then the Meridian could work. If it's cheap enough, why not buy and see? Meridian kit tends to hold a decent second hand value, so if you get a bargain you can't lose! Thanks Pat - I plan on keeping the JoLida amp for quite some time - it powers the Omega speakers very well with their 95db sensitivity. I have an opportunity to pick up a Meridian 556 fairly cheep. Do you feel it'd help my system out? I'm breaking in a pair of Omega Grande 6's with Fostex drivers and comparing them to my B&W DM602's.
