Thanks so much for these hooks. However, I'm not able to install them properly (as I think you intended to install them) and they don't work as I expected (but I'm not well-versed in git hooks at all). I cloned your repository, went to an AUR4 repo and issued $ ~/eli-schwartz/pkgbuilds/setup.sh hooks but links in .git/hooks were not created. Perhaps I erred (it's late already), so I just copied all files to the repository and issued $ ./setup.sh hooks Now links were created. If I'm not mistaken, I can make a change in PKGBUILD and $ git add PKGBUILD $ git commit Now my not-so-favourite editor popped up, asking for a commit message. As you have a prepare-commit-msg hook, a default message should have been created, but nothing is displayed (I expected the default message, that I could change to my liking). When I leave the commit message blank, the commit is aborted. How do I use these hooks and your setup script? In which directory should I run it? And are you sure that the test .*/PKGBUILD$ is correct? When I issue `git diff --name-only --cached`, I only get `PKGBUILD`, without a slash. (Well, you probably are correct, as you most likely test your hooks ;) Thanks again. Best, Marcel

Ah, I thought it was a question specific to that piece of software and I suggested to use the comments for that package (I suppose at least the package maintainer reads comments). I think questions regarding packages may be appropiate here, but if all users from all packages start asking questions about packages here, I fear the mailing list will be cluttered with lots of messages about software only a few people actually use. Of course these are only my € 0,02, I'm in no way a list moderator or prescriber here. > Questions regarding software from AUR are unwanted on Arch general, so > in the past several subscribers send requests regarding usage of > software from AUR to AUR general. And that's why comment discussions feel more appropiate to me: only users of the software are notified. That depends on the workflow of the maintainer. I like to let those files stick around, so I can easily downgrade a package when necessary without redownloading and/or rebuilding sources. One more addition: in case of a package that downloads from VCS sources, the download directory created by makepkg (containing the source tree) should be added to .gitignore. Good point, but we'll also have to add a default .gitignore file, otherwise everything in src/ and pkg/ and all downloaded files will be automatically included in commits. I think we should wait until [1] gets merged into that project: then that file could serve as a default .gitignore file for future AUR packages. > 1. [aur-general] Issue when changing hostname in ~/.ssh/config
Hi, As described in the proposal to the notification I changed the hostname in ~/.ssh/config so that that file now reads: Host aur4.archlinux.org IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_rsa-aur User aur Port 22 And I tried to pull from and push to that server from an existing aur-dev repository. However, that failed with: Permission denied (publickey). fatal: Could not read from remote repository. My public key is correctly filled in the account settings, so I guess that the issue is due to the change of the host name. It could be me doing something wrong, but this issue may pop up again after changing from aur4.archlinux.org to aur.archlinux.org. Best, Marcel

[aur-general] Thoughts on creating texlive-bin-dev
Hi all, In order to provide even more bleeding-edge binaries of texlive-bin I am thinking about creating a texlive-bin-dev package, especially to provide bugfixes like [1] and [2]. However, how to download the source code? One way would be to checkout the full SVN repository (using default pacman svn checkout), but that takes up a lot of space and bandwidth (initially). Of course, if I choose this way, I'd call the package texlive-bin-svn. Another way would be to use rsync to copy only the most recent version c.q. keep the most recent version up-to-date. This is also recommended by [3]. If I choose this way, I'll do an rsync in prepare(). This has the drawback that the revision number cannot be determined in pkgver(), so $pkgver is never updated. This seems to be a major drawback to me. What are your thoughts on this? Or should I simply abandon this project, build binaries myself and manually replaces those in /usr/bin, like I just did to test said fixes? [aur-general] Should we still include VCS packages in makedepends?
Hi, As of pacman 4.2.0 there exist some variables in makepkg.conf that read: #-- The the package required by makepkg to download VCS sources # Format: 'protocol::package' VCSCLIENTS=('bzr::bzr' 'git::git' 'hg::mercurial' 'svn::subversion') It looks like pacman is able to see which package it needs to retrieve a specific VCS source. Do we still need to include those in makedepends? Regards, Marcel

Re: [aur-general] requesting a critique for my build of xen-git-4.5.0-rc3
Wait a moment, you're fetching a specific release, then you shouldn't suffix your package with -git [1]. Even more, you don't need git at all in this case, as there's a tarball available including a signature file. I'd recommend using xen-dev or something like that to indicate you're fetching a testing release. Just change the first instance of your source array to source=("http://bits.xensource.com/oss-xen/release/${pkgver/_/-}/xen-${pkgver/_/-}.tar.gz"{,.sig} (in one line) and regenerate sha256sums with updpkgsums. The signature is checked automatically. Moreover, the install file doesn't need to be listed in the source array. Second, this is an old way to pull git sources (i.e., manually). Since pacman 4.1 you can let the package builder pull git sources. See the wiki [1] and an example PKGBUILD [2]. Please modify your PKGBUILD accordingly. Third, don't use md5sums to check file integrity; to avoid collisions, it is recommended that you use sha256sums. You can set this in /etc/makepkg.conf (and then you can use updpkgsums to generate them). You should enclose every instance of $pkgdir within quotes, to allow for spaces in directory names. Minor detail, but why are you cd'ing to "$srcdir/$_gitname" and then cd'ing to ../../? That's superfluous. Just cd to "$srcdir" and you'll be able to install files included in the source array. The same is true for that cd at the end of 'make install' block. Please rework the PKGBUILD and post it at Github gist or Pastebin, so it's easy for all of us to have a look at it. Just another note: please don't top-post *and* remove lines you're not referring to. And you know you should create source tarballs with mkaurball[3] nowadays, don't you? Otherwise you won't be able to upload your package to the AUR. The only program that uses mysql-connector-c++ I know of is mysql-workbench [1], but that's a bit bloated to build only to test if connector-c++ is working correctly (and I don't know which parts of workbench use it, so that's rather uncertain). I think the best you can do is test the examples in examples/ of mysql-connector-c++. First set the credentials of your locally running db in examples.h. Then change the line in the example file, e.g. prepared_statement.cpp that reads #include to #include "../driver/mysql_public_iface.h" and issue $ g++ -o prepared_statement -Wl,-Bdynamic -lmysqlcppconn \ prepared_statement.cpp Then you can run $ ./prepared_statement I did the same with resultset.cpp, resultset_meta.cpp (which resulted in a runtime error) and exceptions.cpp. Others needed more tinkering, which I'm now unable to do. Hi, On 10 October I discovered an error building mysql-connector-c++ when (Oracle's) MySQL [1] is build with compiler flag -fno-rtti. I posted a comment asking about the removal of this flag in PKGBUILD (it only saves a bit of memory, but everything works fine without this flag). On 29 October I sent the maintainer (cc'ed here) an email politely asking again to remove the problematic flag. Until now I didn't get a response, nor did he change his PKGBUILD. Now someone else is asking the same in a comment. What to do in this situation? Filing an orphanage request seems too harsh to me. Moreover, the maintainer is a TU. Any advice is welcome. Hi all! When trying to submit a package for a barcode font I got an error message > ttf-kix is on the package blacklist, please check if it's available in the > official repos. Please delete these packages, as they are *very* old, unmaintained and/or there exists a more current one: kernel26zen 20090915-1 http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=13902 kernel26zenmm-git 20080913-8 http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=18272 kernel26zenmmotm-git 20080825-8 http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=19364 klibc-zen 1.5-3 http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=13906 Regards, Marcel
[aur-general] Please delete gimp-save-for-web
Hi, Can someone please delete gimp-save-for-web [1], as it is a duplicate of gimp-plugin-saveforweb [2] (though it has a nice package ID ;). Thanks! Regards, Marcel [1] http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=2 [2] http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=13473
[aur-general] Please delete ttf-consolas
Hi everyone, Same as yesterday, but now regarding ttf-consolas: can someone please delete that package [1]; it has no maintainer and ttf-vista-fonts [2] provides the same font (including other variants). Regards, Marcel [1] http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=35124 [2] http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=10408
[aur-general] Please delete ttf-ms-extrafonts
Hi everyone, Can someone please delete ttf-ms-extrafonts [1]; it has no maintainer and as mutlu_inek said in the comments his ttf-vista-fonts [2] provides the same fonts and has a more liberal license. Regards, Marcel [1] http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=35297 [2] http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=10408
[aur-general] Deletion request for kernel26zen-git
Hi, As kernel26zen-git [1] has been replaced by zen-kernel [2] the former should be deleted (there's only a dummy PKGBUILD left). The only other thing that should be done is changing the dependency of nvidia-beta-zen [3] and tiacx-zen-svn [4] (though both packages are old/out of date). Thanks in advance.
