Have a look at MRBS. Meeting Room Booking System. Free and open source
but overall fairly useful for a wide range of things. " It is in
production use at many large organisations around the world for uses
as diverse as it's originally intended meeting rooms to restaurant
tables and aeroplanes at a flying school!"

http://mrbs.sourceforge.net

I am not sure if they mean this but:

Where it is used apparently for accomodation, aircraft, students etc.

2017-02-16 Thread Erich Wittstock
Hello Ben,
I made up a live spreadsheet in google sheets

a
while back and keep rolling it over. This is accessible to all members once
they log into our website .
Instructors and tow pilots have a separate login that enables them to edit
the sheet.
The sheet allows to view the whole year as a planner (not just looking
through a keyhole..), can be accessed on any computer / tablet /
smart-phone.
Cost is zero.

Difficulties have been:
- some members using ancient operating systems / browsers
- some members making a tow entry on the instructor page and then not
finding their entry on the tow pilot sheet
As with any technology that is supposed to be idiot-proof: they just keep
inventing better idiots..
I have been exposed to many content management systems and found that there
are always limitations. Might as well keep it simple.

We have an e-mail list for all members. Intention to fly / requiring a tow
/ training / instructor / book the single seater is made public on the
e-mail list.
I gave the chair of our training panel recently a not so subtle reminder
that he has to do a regular "drum roll" at least twice a week, reminding
members via e-mail list that the next weekend is nigh. And the system is
working well again.
The planner in conjunction of the e-mail list works very well.
A "silent" system would not make much sense for us: for example a booking
for the Discus just being made by the bookee online would be pretty
useless: no one knows unless they check. Ad who does that?
Always remember that machines will only do what you tell them to do - they
won't do that you want them to do..
Hope this helps to give you a few ideas.
I am always keeping a lookout for something better - and let someone else
be the guinea pig.
Erich

PS: anyone interested: I can send a "blank" of the spreadsheet.

There is an online system that seems quite flexible - I've recently started
to use it for a volunteer group I am involved in.

www.signupgenius.com

The functionality in the free version is pretty good - you can certainly
use most of it - some reporting options are not available until you stump
up the cash, and there is a limit to the number of emails you can send each
month.

hope this helps...

Thanks & Regards,

[Aus-soaring] Training booking system and process

2017-02-16 Thread Ben Coleman
Hi all,

Are there any gliding clubs using a booking system of some sort to organise
training activities? This may be as simple as who is turning up and who is
instructing or a complete system allocating student, instructor, aircraft
and timeslot.
If you have experience of such a system please get in touch either here or
via email. I would love to hear the pros and cons.
