Re: [Aus-soaring] Forward Slips

2008-06-19 Thread Mark Rowe

Folks,

Can i just throw in some information that came my way regarding side slipping
some powered aircraft starting with a C.
The rear wing attach has no carry through in the fuselage, sideslipping these
aircraft in the past has resulted in failure of the fuselage side wall, flap,
trailing spar and rear attach point. Ag pilots first started having these
issues but it has a flow on affect, the damage could be there but not visible
until even a gentle slip sets it off.
Please if considering this manoeuvre just check that it is in the flight manual
of the type and maybe also ask experienced folk their opinion.
The C 100 series aircraft have issues with electrolysis on the front attach and
soft rear attach points on the wings, all fine if you and your LAME are aware
of it and appropriately maintain them to mitigate the danger. Apparently there
is no AD due to validation? you cant ask someone who had it happen can you.
The above failures scared the hell out of me when i heard it, due to the fact
we used to descend using a spiralling slip to not shock cool the engine and
loose heaps of height per launch. needless to say we don't operate like this
any more. Made that aircraft not quite as economical after that.

Cheers

[Aus-soaring] Being assertive (CRM)

2008-06-19 Thread Texler, Michael
>And you learned not to fly with somebody more stupid/careless/braver than you
>regardless of their qualifications.

I had the opportunity of flying with a very experienced and respected glider
pilot (the pilot had also worked as a commercial pilot, he had 10,000's of
hours in gliders and powered a/c). The pilot was P1.

I became quite concerned during late final approach (it was a gusty day, we had
been ridge flying), when we were coming in very low over the fence, with not
much airspeed or energy either. We had plenty of height on approach, so
scraping back to the field wasn't an issue.

There was aggressive use of airbrakes on late final to effect a short field
approach. We were less than 50ft over obstacles, no allowance for the gust
factor was used. Given the conditions, there wasn't any room for error.

If the pilot had been a student, I would have demanded a check ride. I didn't
say anything at the time (regrettably). However my respect for this pilots
ability was slightly lessened despite the pilot's vast experience.

Hopefully nobody made a new rule - like two signatures to say that
the control locks were removed.

And you learned not to fly with somebody more stupid/careless/braver
