[Aus-soaring] Come and welcome Peter Temple back

2008-07-24 Thread Catherine Conway

Hi guys

As you know, Peter Temple did very well in Rieti coming 3rd in Club
Class.

He will be arriving back in Adelaide on Saturday at 8am at Adelaide
Airport.

It would be really nice if we could get some people down there to meet
him (yeah I know its early) to show our support for his achievements.

Can you please consider it and get down there if you possibly can.

I've sent this out on multiple lists so apologies to those who get
multiple copies.

Can someone forward this to the ASC email list?

Thanks

Cath.

Re: [Aus-soaring] Dick Johnson

2008-07-24 Thread Patching
Dick was a member (in fact a driving force) with North Dallas Gliders, the
club we joined when dad was sent to the US in 1970. He owned the land and
put considerable effort into making the club work.
He was my instructor, along side dad, and took me through my basic training
at 12 to 14 years of age. I remember he was a very good instructor and he
taught me well.
Dick lived for gliding, his workshop was a truly magical plae with projects
all over the place from his own designed Adastra, which he flew in a world
comps, his HP-13 1/2, (a HP 12 fuselage with 19 m HP-14 wings and his ASW-17
which he was constantly improving. He also had a Skylark 4 which he flew,
often taking the first launch of the day and being the last to land at
sunset.
One memorable event was when I was driving the auto tow car, I think I was
13 at the time. One end of the field was over a hill with a fence at the
bottom. I went over the hill and put my foot on the brakes and nothing
happened. I spun the 59 Buick and came to a stop pararelle to the fence and
then drove slowly back to the take off point. Now, even in those days I said
what I thought and told them the brakes were shot or words to that effect,
and I wasn't going to do anymore tows till it was fixed.
Dick scoffed at me and jumped in the car to do the next tow. He subsequently
did the next tow but didn't come back. After some time we went to see where
he was and found him through the fence and quite stuck in a tangle of wires.
I didn't say anything, I didn't consider it ws neccessary.
He was truly a great glider pilot, devoted to soaring, competition and the
development of sailplanes.
He will be remembered for very long time, not just in the USA but world
wide, and the soaring community mournes his loss.

Thank you for that very sad news Mike, he certainly was a leading light in
the gliding movement.

Richard H. Johnson of Dallas, Texas died in a glider crash near
Midlothian, Texas today at approximately 12:30 central time. The soaring

out to Alice, his wife, and the rest of Dick's family.

Dick has been my soaring hero since I read about his world distance record
flight of 535 miles in the RJ5 in 1951. Even more impressive when I read
about the modifications which turned the original 30:1 glider into a
better than 40:1 glider.

I was fortunate to meet and talk with him on a couple of occasions.
