[Aus-soaring] Turning People off Gliding

2010-07-07 Thread Dion Stuart Baker
Sometimes you just have to wonder what people are thinking when they say
certain things to a newbie or someone interested in learning to fly.

A friend of mine was interested in hang gliding, and asked for some info. I
told him I had no idea about this area, and pointed him to www.hgfa.asn.au

Well, he just replied, and he's no longer interested. Why? Read for
yourself:

Really? Showing a prospective pilot x-rays of broken backs?

Sometimes we have to wonder ...

Dion,
the seabreeze site is a kite surfing site and has nothing to do with hang
gliding!
If your friend can't tell the difference perhaps it is safer that he stays on
the ground... :-)

Bernie,

He's into Wind Surfing etc, but a lot of people on that site are also into
hang and para gliding, hence he asked there.

This is exactly the sort of nonsense that gets us into trouble. You have just
insulted some one, even if trying to be witty, publicly - yes this is a public
form, that the original owner could see.

You could, for example, have interpreted the original post as the potential
pilot asking friends on sea breeze whom also hang glide or paraglide. So we
could reverse it and show that you made a dangerous assumption.

It is no wonder we get the reputation of not being accepting of new people.

The irony of this response is however pretty funny.
