MultiClass, ClubClass and Juniors all have to be scheduled so as not to
conflict in their dates and geography and ideally not to conflict with any of
the World Championship events. There also needs to be at least two weeks
separation between them. Horsham Week and Narromine Cup are fixed to long
standing traditional dates, Qualifying GP ideally follows closely after the
MultiClass, Womens Week often closely aligns with Club Class (immediately
before or after). Logistics, ideal weather patterns (varying from Qld to SA),
availability of tugs, gliders and organising crews also play a large part in
the scheduling thought process.

It is a challenging exercise in scheduling and logistics and sometimes despite
all of everyone’s best efforts and good will, one or another of these events
will collide.

You could equally blame the club class for taking up multi-class's
traditional first 2 weeks of January,

or ; those who wish to fly both club and multi Nats but find it too demanding
[or downright dangerous] to fly both back to back,

or ; those that wish to fly both but thought 1 week in between not worth going
back to work for and 5 weeks too long.

There are many competing interests here and all valid, the SC had to decide and
they did!

Apart from historical pigheadedness, exactly why couldn't Horsham week put the
comp back a little if they are worried about losing pilots this year.??

There is a constant battle between Nrm Cup/ NSW comps/ Junior Nats/ Women's
week too - the calendar is full!

Hi Paul

Perhaps you should ask the organisers of the multi class nationals that
question!

In the mid to late 1960's I was doing a lot of flying in the Boomerang in which
I got my 3 diamonds by Nov 1968, [ No 6 but number 4 actually earn't in
Australia and only the second 3 diamond badge fully earn't in Australia as the
heights for two of those other 3 badges were done overseas.] one of the few 3
diamonds badges earn't in an all wood aircraft.

The best period for flying in those years seemed to be around the end of
January and into early February. Also by then the grain farmers had finished
harvest and there were the big paddocks open for landing if one got caught out.

We held our first competition in Easter 1966 but it was obvious that Easter was
far too late to do any real flying.

I had read an article in the American Soaring around that time by an american
who had flown at an 8 day long competition at Angers in France.

The article was called Eight days at Angers.

I realised about then that if we held a competition starting on a Saturday and
going through until the following Saturday it would be a nice week of flying
for most pilots and would give them time to get home on Sunday and back to work
for the next week.

So when the club [ Wimmera Soaring Club ] came to make a decision on what and
when and if we held another competition following the not very successful 1966
Easter competition I suggested that we hold this 8 day competition beginning
around the second full week in February.

There were other factors involved in this timing as well as Waikerie, Benalla
and a host of then new clubs were all busy organising competitions all over the
place for the then very rapidly expanding gliding movement so we had to fit in.

The first 8 day, week long competition was held at Dooen out of the paddock
across the highway and immediately east of the 660 foot high Dooen Wireless
mast from the 18th to the 26th February 1967,.

As I remember it there were 8 competitors and I think [ but am not sure ] we
flew I think for all of the 8 days.

Yes, but will it be managed? Surely this should have been addressed by the
national body years ago, as in the CAMS example you gave and many other sports.

Once upon a time there was a thing called the
NCCC National Competitions Co-ordinating Committee.

These contests require sanction by the GFA IIRC.

So in about April everyone running a contest puts
in their bids for time slots and the NCCC then
tries to minimise the conflicts. Some of the
conflicts aren't that important eg WA State
contest and any Nationals as few WA pilots go to Nationals.

You could move this process 12 months earlier if
necessary to aloow time for annual leave applications etc.

Re: [Aus-soaring] Calender of Gliding Events

2011-11-11 Thread Tim Shirley

Mike,

The NCC (National Competition Committee) actually still exists - they
just dropped a C somewhere along the line in recognition of the fact
that they deal with a lot more than just Co-ordination. Ross McLean
is the current chair.

The NCC and its predecessor is responsible for scheduling and rules of
National competition. It has never had jurisdiction over State
Associations or clubs. Regardless of what NCC decided, a State
Association can (and sometimes does) schedule a competition in conflict
with a Nationals and so can a club. South Australia is holding an event
in conflict with the Club Class Nationals in January, as well as Horsham
clashing with the multiclass. And it was always thus, though of course
scheduling was a bit easier when we had only one Nationals and not three.

It's a Federation, just like Australia :) And the dark ages were only
dark to those who lacked a torch and some L-ion batteries.

In this setup, the wonder is not that there are clashes but that there
are so few. There are too many events and too few weeks, and at least
in the case of Nationals very few places and people capable and willing
to host them.

What is pleasing is that there seems to be a lot of customers for
gliding events of all types at present. It's probably better to have
this problem than the other one.

Cheers

Re: [Aus-soaring] LiFePO4 cells

2011-11-11 Thread Mike Borgelt

I've found the following:

http://www.all-battery.com/Tenergy3.2V15Ah40152SLiFePO4EnergyCellRechargeableBattery-30078.aspx

These are 15 Amp-hour 3.2 volts per cell. 4 cells make a nominal 12
volt battery.(14.4 fully charged, better than 11 volts discharged)
and are UL listed and the test schedule is described. 150 Amp maximum
current. Each cell is 151 long x 40mm diameter and 480 grams.

LiFePO4 is the safest current lithium technology.

I'm happy enough that these are safe in a gliders under normal
discharge although I don't plan to charge in the aircraft.

Each pack weighs less than the standard 7A-h gel cell and has over
twice the energy content.

You can find the cost of the cells and shipping by going to their
shopping cart. Don't forget GST here.
