[Aus-soaring] Nexus 7 Integration with Flarm, 12V supply

2012-10-04 Thread Paul Mander
I've bought a Nexus 7 and installed XCSoar onto it, and I'm delighted with
the result although I'm yet to fly with it.

My next step is to integrate it into the ASH. Mounting it is easy, getting a
5V power supply to it sounds easy, but what I'd like to do is to create an
interface that takes power from the glider's 12V system, and the data output
from the Flarm, and turns them into an input acceptable to the Nexus.

Any advice? Thanks, Paul Mander

Safety should be no problem, but there are Fly Neighbourly agreements in
place to be observed in the area. There may well be curlover in
immediate lee of cliff edge affecting top landings, but plenty of
landing areas nearby if the lift was better than marginal. Otherwise -
bottom landings at low tide only and with a quick retrieve arranged!

There are lots of coastal ridge soaring sites on sheer cliffs - recent
photo in German calendars of DG300 soaring Beachy Head in UK, and at one
stage a Canadian paraglider pilot held world O&R records for 50 and 100
km soaring the Bight near SA/WA border.

With the wind coming straight onto the sheer cliffs, would there be
enough lift to soar along the edge?

I believe there is a club (Grampians?) that do an annual camp further
westwards along the coast...I wonder if they experience ridge lift on
the coast?

Don't be too sure of that. I'm mainly
interested in having this device as an adjunct
to our variometer systems that support such.

Anyway, I have a source of the same device but at a lower price.

Note this :)

The R-1's insulated electrical wiring attracted vermin. In one January 1953

insulation, requiring "hundreds of cats and repairmen".

[Aus-soaring] Vega vario configuration files

2012-10-04 Thread Robert Hart

Hi

Is there anyone here who can help me reconstruct the necessary
file(s) on the Vega SD card so I can get it interpreting my aircraft
switches correctly? Somehow, plc file disappeared from the card and
all the voice warnings are wrong as a result!

Unfortunately, I didn't back it up years ago when I first purchased
the Vega/Altair combo

Re: [Aus-soaring] Vertica Sports V2

2012-10-04 Thread Rod Merigan
Hi Greg,

I have loaded my unit with Car navigation software as well, I haven’t
experienced any dropouts whilst driving.

I use mine for Paragliding along with a GoFly Pico
https://sites.google.com/site/jarosrwebsite/goflypico/hardware for barometric
alt and vario information, plus a small USB battery which gives me about 20 hrs
use on full backlight.

Paragliders don’t have the room for a 12 v system.

I have also got one of my customers a Glider tools Altimeter/ vario, Vladimir
also has all the cables for the various flight recorders and flarms available

http://www.glidertools.com/cables/

I have a reasonably current (march 2012) Australian Airspace file that I have
added CAR166 airports to, if you are interested.

If you hear of anyone looking for a V2 , I might be cheaper than the other guy.

Cheers

Rod

I'm fairly sure Mike Borgelt is selling them too, along with cables to power
off glider batteries and to connect to flarms, varios etc.

I bought one from the U.K a few weeks ago and have flown a few hours with it.
It's very easy to read even in direct sunlight. Way brighter than any pda and
when you turn it off, it's off. It doesn't need to be kept on charg like many
pdas and pnas.

I must admit that the internal gps stopped working for at least 10 minutes in
clear skies. I plan to run mine off the flarm to avoid this and to get the
on-screen flarm display.

Cheers,

Greg.

Hello Rod,

At a very reasonable price too. What a shame you did not post this email two
weeks ago when I ordered one from the UK!

I think the Vertica looks pretty good, especially as a backup, and it is
refreshing to see a distributor in Oz selling things at a price which makes
buying from overseas unnecessary.
