[Aus-soaring] FW: New Rules: On the grapevine...

2013-08-09 Thread Mandy Temple
On behalf of Tom Claffey Chair of NCC

I can confirm that the issue of finish height and finish ring size was
discussed at last weekend's NCC meeting, however at this stage it is a
discussion item only and there will be no change for the coming season.

Even in the realms of rumour and fantasy, this suggestion is stunningly
silly.

The number of ways in which this won't work are beyond counting.

One thing I can say for certain. I will never be a contest official or a
competitor at any competition where this is a rule.

What exactly is broken, that needs fixing?

Probably the same rocket scientists who brought you the second
signature after rigging, Ron.

1000 feet and 10 km is 33:1. Given that task setters seem to like
headwind final glides and you and I have both experienced final
glides with 30 knots or greater headwinds it seems you may get a
significant number of land outs after finishing as even a 50 : 1
glider may have trouble under these conditions. Of course you want to
do a circuit also don't you?

Adam,

I would have thought that 5 K at 500 ft gave sufficient margin for
safety. This seemed to me to do away with the worm burner final

upon more mature reflection, were bloody dangerous. I would be
interested in seeing the rationale for increasing the radius to 10
K. Then I will be prepared to give a considered opinion.

2013-08-09 Thread Adam Woolley
Yes a 'one zero' kilometer finish ring. I hear that it's being introduced to
give us all a 1000' of altitude to think after we cross the line...

Win a gliding competition every day by outlanding after finishing; or

Continue on to land at the airfield if you can make it.
