News Flash: Gordon Boettger to Attempt Another Record Flight - Monday, February 17th by Gordon Boettger . February 17, 2014 At sunrise on 17 January, we are planning on launching in the Duo Discus glider from Minden at sunrise and aiming for Rapid City, SD as our goal, a distance of over 933 miles. Below is a link to the map with our position updates every 5 minutes. If you'd like to see the details of our position, you can click on the blue dots on the map to see our speed, altitude, time, and position. Please do not send text messages to the InReach as I will be extremely busy. Walt Rogers will be assisting in weather and communications with us throughout the flight. We just have to hope that the weather lines up properly for this to happen. It should be fun to watch as a lot can happen flying without a motor. Fascinating flight to follow. Live!!! 205mph at 18000ft at 10.33 CST Aust 181mph at 25500 at 10.58 CST Aust. He doesn't have a lot of daylight time left to reach Rapid City but it is sure looking good at the moment. Walt Rogers e-mailed yesterday that this was the plan. It was nice to be able to check in on Gordo's progress using the tracking site for his Delorme InReach. I fly with a SPOT, but the InReach is better. The flight plan was filed with ATC, so his transponder was also trackable: http://flightaware.com/live/flight/N55LK/history/20140217/2249Z/KMEV/KCPR Perhaps you will not have known that Gordo is a FedEx pilot, so knows how to talk with ATC. He has an LOA (letter of agreement) which allows him to fly in Class A, above 18,000'. The Duo is also equipped with landing and marker lights.
