Obviously subject to weather and other variables, as Tim has pointed out, but the tasks can be expected to be be a mix of Fixed Tasks and AATs with the majority likely to be Fixed Tasks. AATs will be employed to cope with variable weather conditions and to vary the challenges and are expected to include wedges. Straight in finishes will be strongly encouraged and are expected to be the norm. Weather permitting we hope to be able to challenge the Open Class boys with some looong tasks in order to level the playing field to the 18m guys flying in Open class. ROSS From: aus-soaring-boun...@lists.internode.on.net [mailto:aus-soaring-boun...@lists.internode.on.net] On Behalf Of Tim Shirley Sent: Monday, 8 August 2011 3:15 PM To: Discussion of issues relating to Soaring in Australia. Subject: Re: [Aus-soaring] Tasking AAT 101. A long time ago in a universe far far away, everyone used cameras for waypoint verification. In the Club Class Nationals, in order to cater for the wide range of performances in what was a one-class competition, the POST task was used - this task required pilots to fly to any waypoint they wished, take a photo, and go on to the next waypoint of their choice. The only restriction was that you could not do out and returns, so you could fly A-B-C-A but not A-B-A-B. This task was quite interesting - in that the entire fleet was criss-crossing the task area pretty much at random and there was nothing to prevent two gliders approaching the same waypoint from conflicting directions. With the advent of loggers, it was possible to use AAT tasks to overcome the performance range issue, by setting a task that could be completed by a Libelle as well as an ASW22. The Club class turned to this task quite quickly as it was obvious that the POST task was not really satisfactory. It then turned out that AAT was being flown overseas and was introduced at World Comps, and so the Multiclass Nationals took it up as well. Club Class however continued to fly only AAT because of the performance range issue. It was always intended that in multiclass the split of AAT and fixed tasking should be about 50-50, though as always with tasking that was a guideline, not a rule. The original intention of the AAT task was to address a performance range problem, not an uncertain weather problem - though of course people discovered that it is possible to use it for both purposes. Personally I would agree with Adam that setting very large circles is not a good idea unless there is no alternative. Note also that these decisions on tasking types were made by pilots meetings, not committees or contest directors. When the Club and Sports Class split took place, there was of course an opportunity to introduce fixed tasking in Club/Sports Class, but at first pilots were reluctant to do this. This has changed only in the last two years, and in fact I think (I may be wrong here) that last year (ie, Jan 2011) was the first time that the Club/Sports pilots voted to include fixed tasking as an option. For this coming year, the Local Rules for Benalla include all task types as an option and I fully expect that all classes will fly some fixed tasks. However, tasking is dependent on many variables and I make no guarantees. For the last Club/Sports Class Nationals we flew all AAT, however on most days we used some wedge shaped AAT areas. This had the advantage of better channelling the gliders around a particular task while having the faster pilots heading out further into the sectors but at the same time removing some of the randomness that large circles provide. The wedges were seen as a complication at first, but by the end of the contest were routine for most pilots. This approach will continue at Benalla 2012. I am not responsible for the multiclass nationals or the junior nationals so I can't say what attitude will be taken by those organisations, however if the Nationals Guidelines are followed I think there would be about 50-50 AAT and fixed tasks. Finally, I'm just a Contest Director. I do my best with the rules I am given, to satisfy all requirements and run a fair and safe competition. Anyone who thinks I don't is welcome to the job, at double the salary. As a resident of Narromine I would like to set the record straight ... up to July 1 Ewen held two positions with Narromine Shire Council: airport groundsman and shire ranger. As the latter become more and more demanding it was decided that he be relieved of his airport role to concentrate more on his ranger duties. For those of you who have enjoyed flying at Narromine and commented on the wonderful airport facility, it is all thanks to Ewen and his staff. One of his roles at the airport was to ensure all rules and regulations were adhered to which made him unpopular with some of the airport users who quite blatently felt they were a law unto themselves and could do whatever they wished. Subject: [Aus-soaring] JoeyGlide 2010 - Practice Days 1 2 Hi All, What a great two days it has been so far! This time last week we had been told that Narromine was unflyable, and we may have to cancel the competition. Now here we are, in Waikerie, with all of our competitors having made the change and arrived onsite ready for a great week. Here's an extract from the blog that I am publishing on the Joeyglide Website (http://www.joeyglide.com.au ) 11/12/2010 - Practice Day 1 First day of Joeyglide 2010! High winds and low temperatures caused a fairly conservative task to be set, an AAT with turnpoints at Maggea, Taldra and Loxton A/F. Conditions certainly tested pilots on their first day, and a few ended up in paddocks. Still, a successful day and a good chance to test the scoring system and the pilot's routines. http://www.soaringspot.com/jg2010/results/club/task/day-1.html Task http://www.soaringspot.com/jg2010/results/club/daily/day-1.html Scores 12/12/2010 - Practice Day 2 Due to the hurried relocation of the comp, a second practice day was declared. Initial weather reports showed inclement and unfavourable weather, with convection stopping hurriedly at 1630 hrs. As such, a 2.5 hour AAT with turnpoints at Taplan east then Maggea was declared, giving pilots lots of options if the weather turned foul. As it turned out, by the time the last glider was launched the sky began to clear and the pilots had a good run. Top speeds of just under 100 km/h were achieved, and pilots reported 10-11 kt lift, with all pilots returning to the airfield at the end of the day. Better than expected conditions have caused a lot of pilots to have big smiles at the end of the day. http://www.soaringspot.com/jg2010/results/club/task/day-2.html Task http://www.soaringspot.com/jg2010/results/club/daily/day-2.html Scores We are now looking at the weather over the next few days and the outlook amongst the pilots is positive, with a few strong days expected in the coming week. We have been lucky enough to be visited by certain Major Sponsor, whom you may recognise in the middle of the attached photo. Be sure to follow the JoeyGlide 2010 website and the scores, which are available at Soaring Spot - http://www.soaringspot.com/jg2010/results/ Cheers, Gus Stewart Contest Director 0438 008 126 ___ Aus-soaring mailing list Aus-soaring@lists.internode.on.net To check or change subscription details, visit: http://lists.internode.on.net/mailman/listinfo/aus-soaring

Bring back John in to GFA XO Subject: [Aus-soaring] Want to be an air traffic controller? Enough to bring John Welsh back out of retirement..$463,000 salary SPAIN'S ATC MESS BOILS OVER (AGAIN) http://www.avweb.com/eletter/archives/avflash/1786-full.html#203740 Friday, air traffic controllers in Spain staged a massive sickout just three months since they last voted to strike, nearly one year since reports of their sometimes $1 million-plus salaries, and amidst economists' musings that the country may require a financial bailout. Roughly 90 percent of controllers abandoned their posts Friday, resulting in a massive shutdown of airports and airspace, affecting thousands of flights. Three controllers did arrive to Madrid's Barajas airport to aid arrivals there. The controllers have been involved in contract negotiations over work conditions, wages and privileges. The talks intensified early in 2010 when the government proposed restricted overtime. That alone effectively reduced the average salary of Spanish controllers from about $463,000 to $264,000 annually, according to the WashingtonExaminer http://washingtonexaminer.com/news/world/2010/12/spain-air-traffic-authorit y-closes-madrid-airport . The controllers union now says the country's 2,300 controllers are overworked and have already put in their maximum number of hours for 2010. They also timed their strike for increased impact. -- Sent from my Mosquito VH-FQD Try Gliding www.gliding.com.au ___ Aus-soaring mailing list Aus-soaring@lists.internode.on.net To check or change subscription details, visit: http://lists.internode.on.net/mailman/listinfo/aus-soaring

Some quite good flights here in Nrm during Cup Week but there was a mass exodus on Friday with many pilots heading off to Keepit for the State comps. Re: [Aus-soaring] Today's weather at Nrm
Good idea Ross, especially with Nrm Cup Week coming up. I can give an update on what has actually happened as Keith is flying daily, at the moment, and experiencing the conditions. Keith and Shinzo always refer to Trangie's weather as it is more accurate than Dubbo airport weather. Narromine temperatures are +2 degrees ,on average, on Dubbo, whereas Nrm and Trangie have no hills between them so the temp here is very similar to Trangie. Had a good response to sending out daily weather reports; good for Narromine. Anyone who would like to be added to my list, just let me know offline. At the moment storm over the tope of town. Re: [Aus-soaring] Dunhill 51.3N explained and questions was Ads using gliding
Being an elegant old glider/tug pilot with a Sean Connery look, with an elegant old glider, and his old Dunhill gold lighter, Keith Dixon has been contacted to do an Australian version of the ad. He's having a nose job done on Monday in Dubbo with Dr Michael Richards; the dinner suit's been to the dry cleaners; the Mighty K7 has been given a spring clean and new suits added, so he's all set to go. 'Hoon' Hanchard's promised to spruce himself up and be the wing runner; and KennyMac's promsed to come out of the paddock and workshop to fly the tug and get the cotton seeds out of his gear. I hear the film crew will then go south to get a few shots of Patch in his Kookaburra. -Original Message- From: aus-soaring-boun...@lists.internode.on.net [mailto:aus-soaring-boun...@lists.internode.on.net] On Behalf Of David and Justine Olsen Sent: Thursday, October 08, 2009 4:44 PM To: Discussion of issues relating to Soaring in Australia. [Aus-soaring] Accommodation Nrm/Dubbo
If you are planning to go to Narromine for any aviation event (eg NatFly, - from what I understand accommodation is almost booked out) and cannot find accommodation so plan to stay in Dubbo I recommend the Forest Lodge Motor Inn and Restaurant. The rates are reasonable and the owners, Mick and Liz Lowther (Mick is ex-Qantas) are delightful and go out of their way to make your stay as comfortable and pleasant as possible. One of them will also pick you up at Dubbo airport given prior notice. I'm not sure of their website address (google Forest Lodge Dubbo) but their email address is [EMAIL PROTECTED] I stayed there for two nights whilst Keith was undergoing surgery in Dubbo and they couldn't do enough to help me. [Aus-soaring] From Harry Medlicott
Harry is in Nrm at the moment. Whilst he is able to receive emails he is not able to send. He has asked me to send the following message: Hi All,. I have not been particularly interested in the online debate about the merits or otherwise of Flarms. What has prompted this reply was yet another extremely close near miss at Narromine a couple of days ago in which a pilot on early final was suddenly confronted by a glider crossing his path and an accident was only avoided by him taking instant and violent avoiding action. It would be easy to say they should have seen each other, but how regularly do you scan to the side when on final? Also two tugs came within a metre or two of hitting each other just prior to the NSW State comps and again evasive action was used. A second near miss involving tugs happened more recently. Statistically, if you have near misses then sooner or later a mid air with the strong possibility of a tragedy is inevitable Please consider:- There are now over 5,000 Flarms installed in European gliders, including those flying over flatlands. Many clubs have made them mandatory. Surely about as great a vote of confidence as one could wish for. No matter how good your lookout, no more than half of the airspace surrounding a glider can be seen. A threat can come from any direction. Flarm continuously scans the 360 deg. of airspace around you for several kilometres, and above and below you. Provided ALL gliders and tugs are fitted with Flarms, this must be an added safety factor Australia's best pilots have told me that their lookout virtually becomes non existent under certain circumstances, particularly when trying to centre or work hard lift or very low. Pilots who have used Flarms regularly say they do not become complacent about look out, on the contrary they say it sometimes gives them a wakeup call to smarten up their lookout. It is a physical impossibility to continue a regular, continuous scan on a long flight and even if you did the major threat is usually in front of you and looking away from your direction of travel while conducting a scan, carefully searching the surrounding airspace as suggested by various authorities, means you are not looking where you are going for quite a while. The radar display which shows your glider in the center and the exact position and relative altitude of nearby gliders is a considerable enhancement. Nigel Andrews is developing a comparatively low cost Flarm add on to fit a 57mm hole or sit on top of the panel which as well as giving basic navigational information, displays the radar screen whenever a flarm equipped aircraft comes into range. I find it a great improvement on the standard flarm display. It is very useful knowing the distance separating you from another glider, also their precise track in relation to your glider. How can anyone argue against having this knowledge, which requires all nearby aircraft to be fitted with the equipment? When S type transponders become widespread in Australia, Nigel has plans for an add on receiver which will pick up S type transmissions and show the position of equipped aircraft on the Flarm display. My own accident as well as others I have studied, shows that Flarm would have almost certainly saved accidents. In my case, the data logger traces show I was being followed by another glider a few hundred meters behind, slightly to my left and a little higher. No scan before a turn could have seen him. Would I have started a thermalling turn to the left if Flarm had alerted me to the other gliders presence? Never! Shortly before the collision I saw the other glider on my extreme right in what appeared to be a collision course, so my lookout wasn't all that bad , but I could not avoid him and the other glider hit my wing from behind. The other pilots statement said he did not see me until the instant of the accident. He also said he had been looking at another glider ahead and above. Very common for a pilot to be studying the situation ahead, perhaps other gliders or deciding on the most favourable clouds. We all do it. I am not trying to be critical of the other pilot. Without doubt both Flarms would have given continuous position advice additionally to sounding alarms before the point of contact and almost certainly prevented the accident which nearly cost my life and a new glider uninsured except for 3rd party insurance. I wasn't worried about the money but put a substantially higher value on my life and that of others who Flarm might have saved or will save in the future. We all know Flarm has its limitations. Gliders thermalling together in close proximity can make unexpected changes of direction which would make an accident certain but this is not the scenario of many accidents. The sooner all gliders and tugs have flarms fitted, the safer we will all be, Harry Medlicott Keith Dixon Anne Elliott HYPERLINK mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED][EMAIL

Re: [aus-soaring] QSA State comps last week
Robert Pls contact me direct. AnneE - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: CGC List [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, October 07, 2002 12:53 PM Subject: [aus-soaring] QSA State comps last week Wow I have just had the most fantastic week's flying in my life. Alice and I flew every competition day and we succeeded in doing over 300km each day (I had never done a 300km flight before) - with no outlandings. On the last two days, we managed to fly over 100kph average speed. Much of this is due to Alice - she's an amazing aircraft to fly (particularly with 200kg of water on board) and by the end of the week I was starting to feel that I might just learn to fly her well enough to do her justice. At least I managed to fly well enough not to come last in club class - probably much to Alice's relief as I think a Nimbus 2c in last place in club class would feel acute shame! I learnt heaps listening and talking to the experts. Probably the most useful thing I was taught was to push up my speed in thermals, crank on the bank and pull back on the stick to get into the core. By the end of the week, I was getting the 7kts that the experts were talking about! I also made one glaring mistake - I still don't know how I managed it - but way out in the country I joined a gaggle of gliders, turning in the wrong direction. Fortunately, the only damage was my acute embarassment at making such a stupid mistake. There's an old saying in aviation about mistakes - there's those that have and those that are going to - and maybe by sharing my experience I can prevent some of you graduating from the latter to the former category on this one! The comp was superbly organised and run - with many Darling Downs club members (and their families) working really hard to make it so. To all of the workers, Alice and I both want to say thanks! -- Robert Hart [EMAIL PROTECTED] Strategic IT open source consulting+61 (0)438 385 533 Brisbane, Australia http://www.interweft.com.au -- * You are subscribed to the aus-soaring mailing list. * To Unsubscribe: send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] * with unsubscribe aus-soaring in the body of the message * or with help in the body of the message for more information. -- * You are subscribed to the aus-soaring mailing list. * To Unsubscribe: send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] * with unsubscribe aus-soaring in the body of the message * or with help in the body of the message for more information.
