Dear Peter,
Yes,
Gary Stevenson at Ararat.
He wrote it up in Soaring Australia magazine about 2 years ago with a
fair bit off detail.

John Strickland from Caboolture has a Phoenix Motorglider probably on the water
at the moment.
Not sure if it is coming direct from Europe or via the US Selling Agent.

2013-07-16 Thread Ian Mc Phee
Be real careful to have ZERO dirt in wheel well of glider and trailer, NO
retreads on trailer (yes USA still use retreads on trailers) and you need
import permit for retreads.!! as there may be dirt between tread and tyre
& get import permit now to import trailer. Hopefully ASI is in knots (but
ASI must go 20kts above aircraft VNE) but you will need ALT with mb not
inches. I have used Garry brasher as customs agent and does a good job
always even if he goes on holidays. Some USA trailers have brake light
shared with turn indicator so ask and get your Aussie connector and
multimeter so you can sort out lights at Port pick up.

Also the compass in a USA glider will be a northern hemisphere
compass. You need a southern hemisphere version here.

If you are thinking WTF? you haven't been educated about aircraft

Re: [Aus-soaring] Importing a glider from the USA

2013-07-16 Thread Gary Stevenson
Peter,

It would seem that you missed my write-up on your subject line, so firstly I
suggest that you peruse my article in Gliding Australia, from about 18 mths
ago - it may have been Issue 3 of the mag? Maurice Little died in a glider
crash, but I think his firm - ITM (International Trade Management), in
Tullamarine will still import a glider for you. I have no idea of their
current expertise. As I said in my article you need a reliable agent.
Maurice told me there are literally thousands of Customs and Shipping
brokers around; any one of which will organize the transport (and the much
else involved), for you. The operative word in the2nd last sentence is
RELIABLE: The word COMPETENT also springs to mind!

The points that other postees on this list have made in response to your
question are all good, but are (mostly), not directly relevant to
"transport". Note however that Gary Brasher told me about 12 mths ago that
he cannot now do this work - a great pity.

What is the relevance of your last question?

If you are NOT a "tyre kicker", feel free to contact me (off line please).

Regards,

Gary

Re: [Aus-soaring] Importing a glider from the USA

2013-07-16 Thread Gary Stevenson
Hi Roger,

Thanks for that. Your post allows me to make a very important comment.

In my article in Gliding Australia I hope I covered ALL - rather than"
fair"- detail on importing a glider, and then went on to cover what you
needed to do next, once you had the glider in your hot little hands.

What I would like to make perfectly clear here, is that what I wrote applied
specifically to a particular period in time. The finger of time has moved,
and inevitably this has brought change; so for anybody contemplating
importing a glider now, it is essential for them to do their research, and
find out what are the current requirements.

Caveat emptor - let the buyer beware.

Re: [Aus-soaring] Importing a glider from the USA

2013-07-16 Thread Jim Staniforth
Shipping USA to Aus you will likely use an American freight forwarding
company, whether it's organised through a local contact like Gary Brasher or
not.

My last experience with rates was that the price fluctuates with demand. Allow
for a large window of time and the actual cost to ship can be almost cut in
half. There's no cutting port fees and taxes.
I think that if you use a standard 40' container, not a high cube, the
availability is better.

Be ready to deliver to the port (probably Long Beach or Oakland) when you
finally get the sailing date.
Its not easy to get two trailers in a container. Involves removing axles.

pool resources if you want to import after Jan 2014. I don't think my
