And outside of gliding, there was Tiny, the blind terrier, who was Kevin
Warren's dog which sat on a shelf behind Kevin in the Pawnees and Braves while
Kevin sprayed crops and, occasionally, towed gliders.

2015-06-22 Thread Graham Watts
During the mid 60's Southern Cross dog Pycho operated in a similar manner except
that he did it down at the winch end. All his side teeth were missing due to the
knots going through and on a couple of occasions he hung on until he was lifted
a metre or so above the ground when the glider lifted the wire.

George Detto's cat employed its self keeping rats and mice numbers down and
away from George's precious Kiefer stocks (Baltic Pine). In return, George fed
the cat better than he did himself..

Spreader's flying experience came about when he misjudged things and got
caught between wire and skid. It was a very short and very final experience,
according to those who were there.
It's true, and I remember Spreader.

I've been flying with a dog. Not my dog, but the instructor's who was in the
back seat. Also in a Blanik. This was in NZ so maybe it does not count in
terms of odd stories.

My cat used to travel to visit his parents on a motorbike. He preferred
riding in a backpack worn facing forwards sitting on the tank under the
faring. He used to get his head out and enjoy the ride.

Maybe it was the Blanik which caused the legendary gliding cat to out his
claws? At least my cat was travelling in style on a 1975 square case 900SS.

Re: [Aus-soaring] flying cat

2015-06-22 Thread DMcD
HA,

There was a flying dog in Sydney a few years ago, at Cooks Terrace.

A paraglider pilot was walking towards the takeoff with his canopy
inflated just as a car with a dog in the back arrived at the site.
Cooks Terrace is a dog park, almost abandoned by dogless humans. One
of those places where you spend all your time looking downwards and
still manage to tread in last night's Pal, hopefully not in bare feet.
The runoff on a rainy day runs down to the local beach.

Anyway, the dog owners reached over the seat and undid the door. The
dog bolted off over the hill and ran towards the paraglider pilot who
was just about to step off into space. And so did the dog, snapping at
his heels.

After a short flying career, the dog landed on the sand below. The
bizarre side of the story is that a vet was walking on the beach below
and was unable to resuscitate the unfortunate dog.

Sits around the pie cart all day and ensures all is well.

Because the sport has gone through a number of evolutions, these are
precisely the stories which deserve capturing.
As the 'it can't happen now' in the current preferred form of the
sport
means that whole generations of pilots both don't understand the short
hand references some pilots make

plus the connection these make to previous modes of the sport.
Some pilots then become perplexed (even angry if past posts are any
guide)
as they intuitively guess that they are missing out on something
relevant.

Like George Detto's workshop cat
(ask a long term Southern Cross pilot)

the horse drawn Zeppelin
(shhh, don't mention the war)

and JRIP Industires
which even though it is very recent is already a 'colours' anecdote
(the story was offered to a gliding magazine but that only confused the
editor)

Re: [Aus-soaring] flying cat

2015-06-21 Thread Kevin McGowan

Mike Valentine told a story of the resident cat at Euroa who often went for a
flight in the Blanik
curled up in the space behind the instructors head. On this occasion the cat
sat on the instructors
lap and as it was "only" a check flight the instructor allowed it. As the winch
launch proceeded the wire broke
and the "student," shoved the stick forward, the cat feeling the effect of this
attempted to grab onto
whatever it could. Being a warm summer day the instructor was wearing shorts,
well you can figure out
the result of that. It was said that the cat was then grounded for life. Bloody
instructors!
