Interesting. Flushing some resolvers now, but odd that I'm also seeing

Re: [AusNOG] 4G router alternatives to Cradlepoint

2020-12-08 Thread Andrew Yager
Just wanted to say a massive thank you to those who took the time to reply.

We've got a bunch of options now in our price point, and are going to
procure some units to test with and assess over the next couple of months.
Once we're done, I'll try and provide some feedback. There are some very
compelling 4G and 4G options out there that "on paper" do the job quite
well - so keen to see how they run when we actually test them out.

Thanks,
Andrew

[AusNOG] 4G router alternatives to Cradlepoint

2020-12-06 Thread Andrew Yager
Hi,

I feel like someone is forever asking this question.

I'm looking for a solid alternative to Cradlepoint for a large rollout
(about 400 sites) with 4G primary connection. The sites have unreliable
power, which means things like SRXs are not a go. (I do like the 320s with
LTE mPIM "mostly").

Aside from Cradlepoint's IBR commercial model becoming a bit more
challenging with subscriptions, we are keen for something that is solid,
basic, and reliable, and can ideally run on DC power. It's even better if
we can connect an external antenna.

Only real requirement is two ethernet ports and the ability to do IPSEC
tunnelling. BGP/VRF support would be nice (yes, over the IPSEC circuit) -
but honestly, it's a requirement that can be engineered around.

Customer would settle for something solid around the $800-$1k mark, so any
reasonable options around this price point would be *greatly* appreciated.

Thanks,
Andrew

Re: [AusNOG] Scam Calls originating from 02 8006 2433

2020-09-26 Thread Andrew Yager
My experience is while we all consider these things important, there is
little practical interest in addressing these things. It is entirely
possible that the routing carrier for the number does not transmit the call
in question, either because the endpoint in question is using a different
carrier for outbound, or the source CID is spoofed.

All you can do is notify your provider who routed the call, who then traces
it through - but more often than not, this dead ends.

I understand that the STIR/SHAKEN adoption in the US is designed to at
least partially address this, but I think until we can get a consensus on
how to deal with this both technically and administratively between
providers this will remain a problem. If I'm reading the RFC on this right
too, it requires someone to set themselves up as a trust entity, and for
everyone in the chain to participate; so unless we saw every carrier adopt
this (such as proposed to be mandated in the US) it just won't work.

Until this is "easy" to deal with, I suspect we'll have to keep dealing
with it.

[AusNOG] NBN Number Managed Disconnection process

2020-02-25 Thread Andrew Yager
Hi,

I feel like an idiot for even asking this, but I'm bashing my head not able
to quite work out the process.

   - Customer has internet service not with NBN (e.g. EA).
   - Customer has approaching NBN disconnection date
   - Customer is moving numbers from provider A to provider B
   - Port is submitted, accepted and scheduled
   - Managed Disconnection Date will occur before port is completed
   - Porting carrier advises that disconnection date could break port

Who needs to contact who to tell someone that the port is in progress and
to not do the disconnection? Porting Carrier says not them. No NBN person
to contact. Losing carrier doesn't care.

I feel like there must be a person or a bit of the process or a magic code
word one needs to yell… but I haven't been able to get to the bottom of it!

(And yes… we've now been doing this for several years, and still haven't
got a straight answer… and most of the time it's not an issue… but…)

Thanks,

[AusNOG] Corecess SS5 chassis

2020-01-07 Thread Andrew Yager
Hi,

Just a random question; we have a customer who has a Corecess SS5 chassis
that has had the control card fail. They own the hardware; but since
Corecess is basically dead as a brand, they can't get replacement parts.

I know most people (including us) have been ripping these magnificent
pieces of hardware out of any network they can get their hands on… does
anyone have a chassis, fan, control or GPON card kicking around they want
to part with for $$'s?

Tried that one.

We think it's a dead/dormant service that isn't actually in use, but is
still somehow coming in. Packet usage is consistent with a
deactivated/non-existent service; but auth packets are still coming in, so
it's still alive somewhere.

[AusNOG] Locate a Telstra DSL service from details in a RADIUS packet?

2019-07-09 Thread Andrew Yager
Hi,

Possibly a dumb question.

In our RAIDUS packets generated from our LAC we have a bunch of information
about Telstra DSL services when they terminate on our network. We have a
rogue service that we are trying to locate the FNN it's actually on, but
that useful data is not in the RADIUS packets.

Does anyone know if it's possible to find the FNN in reverse from the
RADIUS packet?

The Calling-Station-ID lists the DSLAM card and port it's on, but I can't
see any way to map that back to a physical service.

Thanks,
Andrew

Re: [AusNOG] Telstra multiple service faults - Chatswood Exchange?

2019-04-06 Thread Andrew Yager
For those others with services still out from this (I know we aren’t the only
ones) latest update from TW:

“APOC team advised, Contractors are on site again today with VAC truck. They
are draining flooded FAPs and will complete rod and rope work today. The cable
will be hauled tomorrow and the expectation is that splicing will commence
tomorrow night.”

I’m not quite sure what happened, but around 11pm last night there were
definitely no contractors working on site - not sure what the restrictions etc
are for work and RMS approval limits are, but would have generally thought that
it should have been possible to do overnight works.

Anyway...

Hi All,

Fibre damage at Chatswood occurred approx. 10pm last night by 3rd party

‘catastrophic’.

Many, many pairs affected with 300m of new haul required. They are ETA to
starting splicing around 5-6pm tonight, but anyone who has driven around
Chatswood around peak time will know that traffic will cause nightmares for all
involved.

There is still no ETR, but if you haven’t made alternative arrangements ,
you’re in for a long wait. My best guess is you’re looking at another 12-24
hours.

[AusNOG] 1/4 Rack in Interactive Sydney

2019-03-19 Thread Andrew Yager
Hi All,

Apologies for the noise.

We have an opportunity to offload a quarter rack in Interactive in Sydney
if anyone is in need of it (rack is now surplus to our requirements). We
also have some Superloop cores running out this way if someone needs to get
somewhere from there and doesn't want the headache of sorting that out.

Feel free to contact me off list for details etc.

Thanks,

[AusNOG] Issues with Telstra DCI Waves this morning?

2018-10-17 Thread Andrew Yager
Hi,

Not confirmed and just fishing for now, but we've seen some instability on
some Telstra DCI paths this morning, and have recently seen a rather large
number of circuits from a range of upstream providers flap in strange
combinations that seem unrelated to us.

Is anyone else experiencing any random issues with service
drops/outages/etc over the last hour or so?

Will help us know where to dig next.

Re: [AusNOG] Vocus voice inbound issues?

2018-01-31 Thread Andrew Yager
Thanks for all the replies. Looks like this issue may have been
(indirectly) our fault.

We advertised some specific routes to stop a major ISP's traffic preferring
HE via the US, and appear to have fallen victim to some RPF as our voice
subnet hit the global table.

Thanks to everyone from Vocus who jumped in and helped.

Thanks,
Andrew

[AusNOG] ATS vs STS & recommendations?

2017-11-07 Thread Andrew Yager
Hi All,

One of our DC providers is removing some power from a single feed in some of
our racks soon, and a couple of our customers have some single fed units that
are connected to the “wrong” rail.

We are looking to help them out with ATS or STSs. I remember some discussion
some time ago about whether one is better than the other, and some quite
technical arguments why you would prefer one or the other.

For a standard 10A outlet and a 500-1kw load what do people recommend these
days?

Thanks,
Andrew

Re: [AusNOG] High number of inbound automated Chinese language calls on AAPT CTS

2017-10-27 Thread Andrew Yager
They are spoofing source CLI so masking/monitoring CLI is useless. We have had
downstream customers whose business has been significantly impacted by having
their CLI used recently as an advertised number in scams similar to this at
least twice this year.

Someone has loose ACLs on their inbound and doesn’t check their customers
properly... :(

And yes, it definitely isn’t limited to AAPT. Just had one today to my DID on a
Symbio inbound number.

Had a conversation with my Telstra guys this week in relation to phone system
hacking where phone systems were being breached and then systematically being
used to autodial numbers.

The breaches can be occurred via –

Voicemail port hack is where their default pin number for their voicemail is
the same has their 100 dial in number.

SIP / VoIP credentials can be hacked / obtained and then assume that SIP
network.

Alternatively, their entire network has been hacked and the hacker is sniffing
for IP Phone system and then interface into it to make calls.

Hi Jay,
Unwelcome Communications procedure only work when you have the source numbers.
It's hard to give the CTS provider ~10,000 source numbers ;) They are trying
however to chase it up. No it's not coming from a sip gateway. This equipment
is not on the internet.

Matt.

There are methods for dealing with unwelcome or nuisance calls.
It's not always effective, but its worth a try.

If your calls fit the definition of an "UNWELCOME COMMUNICATIONS" you may be
able to utilise http://www.commsalliance.com.au/Documents/all/codes/c525.

The OP may have a claim to this with 3000 calls within 4 hours.
Contact your CSP. "C/CSPs must assist end users in receipt of unwelcome
messages where it is reasonably possible to do so "

They may only pass the complaint on to the originating carrier, but you might
get lucky.

The other thing I initially thought of when I saw this ( but it seems like its
probably not the case after reading other peoples accounts ).
Make sure your SIP equipment only accepts SIP from your SIP provider. Sometimes
you find people scanning your network, doing this sort of thing.

Good luck !

Jay
