Re: [AusNOG] [AUSNOG] Disk wear & Foucault Period

2019-08-21 Thread andrew khoo
i hate to be a “me too”.

i personally believe this issue is of relevance to operators.

in the australian context this is even more relevant due to potential costs
we have to incur to keep spinning rust for our compliance requirements.

maintaining a healthy lifecycle means potentially extending the useful life
of storage that surely an operator cannot run without.

just my 2c.

(and OP’s theory might mean a migration to DCs in darwin? :) :))

Subject: Final amaysim Industry Social for the year - Sydney - Thurs 01-Nov-18

We're now heading into the final stretch of 2018 and appears to have been a
crazy crazy year for everyone in the industry.

I hope everyone has had a good year so far, and it's time for us to have a
drink or two and a chin-wag amongst ourselves for the final time.

amaysim and IAA invite you to beer, wine, stuff, pizza, ginger ale
(non-alcoholic :)), food etc etc etc at amaysim's Sydney office on November 1st
(Thursday).

Everyone is welcome with wine, beer, stuff, ginger ale (non-alcoholic) and
other beverages from 5:30pm onwards, with pizza and other food from 6:30pm.

amaysim's office is at Level 6, 17-19 Bridge Street. Sydney (across from the
ASX).

All are welcome but please RSVP me off-list so we can plan catering (and make
sure we have enough beer and other fluids).
Please advise too if you have any specific dietary requirements, or if you will
be arriving after 6pm (so we can arrange access)

See you next in a couple of weeks

regardless of validity or virtue or other discussions, there ARE

Ive long been a member of Ausnog mailing list, I find the
information that is often posted here to be quite valuable; I
have also been watching this thread with a particular keen
interest.

Particularly as I was waiting to see how long the #MeToo and
‘gender diversity’ was going to get pushed.

Firstly let me say, any assault, sexual or otherwise is not
acceptable. Yes IT as an industry is over-represented by males;
however to second you start to include someone in something like
a board selection based solely on their genitalia is the second
you loose any credibility. I wholy subscribe to the idea of the
‘best person for the job’

If that means 25% of one gender and 75% of another then fine,
they are all selected on their merits.

Anything short of selection based on merits (ie: Gender) opens an
entirely different can. Ie: is there someone of
Asian/African/Australia/aboriginal/TSI background? No? wow
wouldn’t that be racist?

Suddenly people talk gender and its acceptable.

I believe that IT, Along with many industries still has a long
way to go to be fully inclusive of all participants, regardless
of race/religion/gender/background – but selection based on
gender, percentages, inclusion policies is _not_ the way to get
the recognition that some hard-working people deserve. If I
worked in a female dominated industry (teaching, midwifery,
childcare, etc) I would want to be selected for something like
this based on my work ethics, input, and recognition – not simply
to be the token male.

We as an industry – and as humans – should be there to support
our colleagues when they get targeted and victimised, however I
also agree that if an accusation is made, and reported to the
‘other company’ then it should also be accompanied with proof –
too often we are seeing the #MeToo being used as a weapon to
destroy people – predominately men – without a shread of proof.

I do however agree that an ausnog post is not the correct forum
for that proof and that is best handled between the direct
parties – it was suggested at the CEO level – this protects the
victim, the *Alleged* (I use this term deliberately as until it
is proof we have due process – innocent until PROVEN guilty –
same as the media reporting on items that are before the courts.)
aggressor until a chain of evidence can be established and only
then actioned upon.

Im sure I will cop back-lash on this, virtue signalling and all…

Re: [AusNOG] Mikrotik routers in HA environments

2018-06-25 Thread andrew khoo
we have deployed Mikrotiks in the field as PPPoE and LNS
termination devices. they have been reliable for us.

however, we only use them for single purpose. no MPLS. no OSPF.
no BGP. simple default routes.

i have seen people deploy them running all sort of functionality
etc and anecdoctally those tend to melt down more often.

if you do go down this path, note that the CCR1036s are single
PSU. the CCR1072 would be the more ideal choice (If loaded), but
then you are close enough in the ballpark to the lower-end of the
more established router purveyors.

I was talking with another DC customer and they swear by Mikrotik

I’ve played with Mikrotik in a domestic/home fibre connection
scenario, but not in a DC environment.

What’s the consensus from others?

Can a pair of Mikrotik routers be configured for a *reliable* HA
scenario ?

Happy to chat offlist or share if this is of interest to others.

[AusNOG] sydney social - weds may 16th

2018-05-02 Thread Andrew Khoo
Time passes when we're all having fun.

Lots of changes are happening to our industry at the moment, and we have not
really had a time to have a drink or two and a chin-wag amongst ourselves.

So... amaysim and the IAA are once again holding an industry social in 2 weeks
time (Wednesday May 16th).

You are invited to partake with us beer, wine, stuff, pizza, ginger ale
(non-alcoholic :)) etc at amaysim's Sydney office from 530pm onwards, with
pizza and other food from 630pm.

amaysim's office is at Level 6, 17-19 Bridge Street. Sydney (across from the
ASX).

All are welcome but please RSVP me off-list so we can plan catering (and make
sure we have enough beer and other fluids).

Please advise too if you have any specific dietary requirements, or if you will
be arriving after 6pm (so we can arrange access)

See you all in a couple of weeks!

Google Voice (non Fi-integrated) came close to a model i liked, albeit
limited to +1 numbers. SMS and/or voice forwarded to other devices or
email, even transcribed. outbound to non +1 at Hangouts rates.

alas, now that I have integrated it with my Fi account, most of the magic
has gone away.

[AusNOG] Industry Social - Sydney - Weds 07-Feb

2018-01-29 Thread andrew khoo
Happy new year to all!

I hope everyone has had a good start to the year. And to help everyone kick
start it even more, we're going to start our industry socials once again
for 2018.

amaysim and IAA invite you to beer, wine, stuff, pizza, ginger ale
(non-alcoholic :)), food etc etc etc at amaysim's Sydney office next
Wednesday (7th February).

Everyone is welcome from 5pm onwards, with pizza and other food from 6pm.

amaysim's office is at Level 6, 17-19 Bridge Street. Sydney (across from
the ASX).

All are welcome but please RSVP me off-list so we can plan catering (and
make sure we have enough beer and other fluids).

Joe Wooller and Tim Raphael will be on hand to say hello on behalf of the
IAA and answer any queries or just plainly chew the fat re NSW-IX and
related.

Please advise too if you have any specific dietary requirements, or if you
will be arriving after 6pm (so we can arrange access)

See you next Wednesday!

Re: [AusNOG] Hiring 5 x Network Admins and Engineers

2017-10-19 Thread Andrew Khoo
I'm going to add a me too here :)

amaysim are hiring plumbers and tool-makers - primarily in Sydney and
Melbourne, but remote working is an option.

happy to upskill folks that can write in perl/php/python/ruby/golang etc etc
and our shop has the latest tooling and methodologies in the dev/devops space.

we already have a huge contingent of 100+ devs but they are all already working
on rolling out our other verticals (mobile, energy, devices etc)

email off-list and we can talk at our next industry social in Sydney next week
(Oct 26 - details to follow) or grab a bevvy with us on our next visit to
Brisbane, Melbourne or Perth.

Subject: [AusNOG] Hiring 5 x Network Admins and Engineers

Hi all,

Not normally doing this, but at Superloop we are looking to recruit between 5-8
network admins and engineers. These rolls will be working on a series of
projects including network migration and integration.

We are looking for both experienced Engineers and also junior Admins that we
can work with an upskill over time.

Formal PD's/ads will be coming out soon, but for the benefit of Ausnog
community dropping it here first. If you're keen please send your CV to
care...@superloop.com

Cheers

Over a few drinks last Friday, there was a comment made that folks from
Brisbane never get to do AusNOG as it’s never held up there.

So, a few of us from the South will be in Brisbane later this week and we would
like to suggest a social catchup for industry this Friday (15/09).

Per previous tradition, we will start proceedings at the Jubilee at 5pm.
Drinkies will definitely be consumed, and possibly some dinner and other
festivities later.

All are welcome.
