Re: [Ayatana] A better chat experience

2011-03-09 Thread frederik.nn...@gmail.com
yeah, we considered "Recent Conversations" aka "Recent Contact" in some of
the mockups from the Me&Messaging Menu brainstorming threads..
A very good example here might be Skype, which also has "Recent
Conversations".

According to the cosmic "Law of Correspondence", when i see and subsequently
click something labelled "Chat", i would expect to find a most uncomplicated
way of doing that, "chat" being a verb here.
Since in most cases we want to respond to, resume or review a previously
commenced conversation, "Recent Contact" would be useful, with "Contact"
meaning a conversation, a filetransfer, a VoIP call or a personal
subscription.

yeah, Shell works well with Empathy, up to the point that Empathy becomes a
background engine.
The fact that Empathy's UI is the Chat UI we use in Unity is not so fresh,
and your mail raises important questions.

I think it would make a lot more sense to focus on messaging, especially in
the Instant Messaging way you suggest, in the Messaging Menu, than to fill
that menu with application launchers, for which purpose we already have the
Unity launcher. I think clicking the envelope or whatever other symbolic
icon will represent "Conversation" or "Message" in the future should present
me with just that: conversations.
Every other thing would be semantically misaligned.

Re: [Ayatana] No one will ever use the upper-left Ubuntu button

2011-03-09 Thread Marc Lajoie
It should also be mentioned that my proposal for the Ubuntu button (clck to
recall, click to flip dock) would also be ideal for tablet/handheld devices
as it would allow the user to recall and interact with the dock using only
the thumb at the edge of the screen.

Another thing worth mentioning is that using the mouse, as opposed to touch,
the dock could be recalled immediately when hovering over the button, saving
the extra click when using a mouse, so that to get to the "places" side of
the dock only one click would be necessary.

I'm liking this idea more and more, though I might be the only one!

it's not too involved and helps make my suggestion more clear, if you can
explain to me how to go about it.

Re: [Ayatana] window and workspace management in unity

2011-03-09 Thread Bazon

Nice timing for you, Shane, but unfortunately no one else seems to care?

OK, reading a bit here showed me that images show more than words, so
here are two images from me, showing the "how to pick the right text
document window?" problem:

image 1:
window spread in unity with 6 text documents:

http://ubuntuone.com/p/gtO/

seriously, it is very hard to distinguish the several documents this way!

image 2:
quick and dirty mock up: window spread with title not zoomed:

http://ubuntuone.com/p/gtQ/

that way, selecting windows would be easy.

by the way, I first tried that with pdf Documents in evince, but showing
more than 4 documents in a window spread always crashed unity/compiz for
me:

TBH I think we can do some nice stuff with workspaces if we think hard
about it. The issue is we need to be very careful since they are
already a bit un-needed so we need to think of useful good things to
do with them or we need to remove them if we cant think of good ways
to use them.

hello, i'm new to this list.
see (*) below why i came here.

i have a few comments on window and workspace management in unity:

1. selecting windows
when you have multiple windows of one application, clicking its icon in the
launcher gets you an graphic overview of all windows of this application.
selecting the right window can be quite hard like that: it's easy when you
have several images, but when you have several text documents, it's really
hard to distinguish them: everything is zoomed much smaller! selecting one
such window was much easier by window-title in the task bar.
so i propose:
just don't zoom the window title. or maybe make a bubble for each window in
which you can read the title.

2. workspace management
i'm used to work on six workspaces and doing that, i don't like to be
distracted by things going on on the other workspaces. in gnome or with
cairo dock (as an option), that was easy: one just can see representations
of the windows on the active workspace in the taskbar / in the dock.
with unity, that seems to be not possible: the launcher shows
representations of ALL windows on ALL workspaces. plus the launcher bar can
get overfilled, so you have to scroll... (avoiding overfilled taskbar was my
first motivation to use more than one workspace)
so i propose:
please add at least an option, so that one only sees the things on the
momentary workspace. see bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/683170 and
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/689733

3. launcher options
for better window / workspace management, i would like to have some more
right click options for the launcher:
  * open new window
  * close all
  * close all on this workspace
  * show all
  * show all on this workspace

thank you for your attention.

regards,
Bazon

Give them a chance they will comment soon id say plus Mark tends to do
batch replies to this list so it may take a little while to get back
but he is great for answering back and he does read everything.

I agree on this and id say it would help if the name of the window was
displayed under or over the image of the window in the spread
workspace. Other than showing the name maybe a slight zoom on hover so
you can see a bit more of a close up view of the window.

Looks a bit dirty id say they shouldnt use a window title bar id like
if it was something a bit cleaner so just the title as a label rather
than embedding a bar and it being really out of context.

Re: [Ayatana] No one will ever use the upper-left Ubuntu button

2011-03-09 Thread Xavier

Hello,

I also agree.

With Dash I can launch every application / recently used file / favorite
folder, and I'm used to go to left top of screen for that menu as before
on Gnome panel, so it's perfect for that.

I'd like to be able, without loosing any another Unity functionality, to
remove from dock the "Application", "Place", "Mounted Volumes" and
"Trash" icons, and keep space to add more launchers for apps I use very
often.

Best regards,

Xavier

+1 I find myself only using the ubuntu button as well because I can
get to anything from it where as the other buttons are limited in
their scope and I need to think more about which one to use.

I have to agree.
I experience the same problem with terminal windows, as I usually have
several of them opened at the same time...
