[AZORES-Genealogy] Thanks for the bird identity
Nice to know it is a rooster. I'm not too good with bird identification! I have several of them as they are painted so beautifully. I was in Sintra and a man and woman selling carved Folk objects on the street were from the Azores. Many of their objects were this rooster. Thanks again for the info. [AZORES-Genealogy] Genealogy Programs for the Macintosh by Dick Eastman
Dick Eastman, genealogy tech guru, wrote about genealogy programs for the Mac. He mentions Parallels and VMware and that other stuff that Mac users use to trick the computer into running Windows. http://blog.eogn.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2008/09/genealogy-progr.html -- Cheri Mello Listowner, Azores-Gen Researching: Vila Franca, Ponta Garca, Ribeira Quente, R. das Tainhas, Achada --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ To unsubscribe from this group, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Follow the confirmation directions when they arrive. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Thanks for the bird identity
Those roosters must be an island thing. A friend brought me a little carved rooster whistle (1-note) from the Canary Islands. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Bird Superstitions
Hi Pat, Just curious as to where in Rhode Island you are from. I'm in Fall River and Pereira was my grandparent's name. Joanne Souza -- Original message -- From: Patricia Butcher [EMAIL PROTECTED] Growing up in RI and now living in the desert, I miss the early morning sound of the crowing roosters. My Uncle, Joe Perry, raised chickens and I was surrounded by them as a kid. He was very bonded to his roosters and when he was ill and didn't have long to live, his nephew brought his favorite rooster in to the house to visit him. It was a very heart warming moment. Patricia At 11:25 AM 9/6/2008, you wrote: The Portuguese Rooster originated in mainland Portugal in the north. It comes from the town of Barcelos. It is supposed to bring good luck. Here is Wikipedia's version of the rooster story: The town's famous symbol is a rooster, in Portuguese called o galo de Barcelos. The legend says that a rich man made a big party. When the party was over, the rich man noticed that his sterling cutlery was stolen by a guest. He accused a pilgrim and let him go to court. He protested his innocence, but the judge didn't believe him. The judge was about to eat a roasted cock and the pilgrim said: If I am innocent, this cock will crow three times. When the pilgrim was about to be hanged the cock crowed. The judge release the pilgrim. The story ends a few years later when the pilgrim returned and made a statue over the event.
