2009-02-09 Thread EMIL

Hi Sam,

Yes, to the connection to Al Rose that Pat and I have. It does come through The
Rosa side of his family.
Manuel Rosa born Feb 15, 1873 is our cousin. I do have Fraga grandparents
though. Gaspar Fraga married Isabel Melo both are from Terceira, their daughter
Maria Antonia Fraga was born in Santa Barbara, Cedros, Faial and this is my
line as well as Pat's. Maria Antonia Fraga is both Pat and my 8th great
grandmother. She married Antonio Duarte Jul 25, 1633 in Santa Barbara, Cedros,
Faial, Azores. Antonio Duarte is also Al Rose, Butch's 9th great grand father
and our (Pat and I) 8th great grandfather.

Emil and Pat; Can you tell me how your lines connect with my cousin Butch. (Al
Rose) Butch's grandmother, Mary Amelia Fraga (Frazer) and my grandfather,
Antonio Fraga, were siblings.

I suspect you are related to Butch thru his Rose line. I say this because, to
my knowledge, neither Butch nor I have found decendents of the other siblings
of our grandparents nor do we even know the names of the siblings of our
ggrandparents. So, if I am correct and you are related to Butch via his Rose
line (his grandmother's husband's line, I would not then be related to either
of you. Darn, cause I would really like to make more connections! :-))

All my best, Sam in CA

2009-02-09 Thread Sam Koester

Hi Margie; Yes, we have corresponded before, unfortunately for both of us, we
have not found a connection. According to my aunt, my grandfather had a
relative in Oakland, CA but; I have yet to locate that line and have no idea
where it would connect. I would dearly like to know where my Fraga line
originated but; have no clue where to look. Trying to go thru all the parishes
on the 3 islands where there are a lot of them doesn't seem like the road to
take, at least not yet. Anyway, good luck on your search and I'm always glad
to hear from you. Regards, Sam in CA

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: SATA Baggage Allowances

2009-02-09 Thread nancy jean baptiste

Hi E,
It seems to me that the inter island weight is 20 or 25 kilograms. Several
times we've been over limit trying to take cast iron frying pans, etc. to
Pico...(one year I made pottery plates!). They sometimes charge for the extra
weight and sometimes notlike last yearshe told us they were'nt that
much over and let us go without paying extra. When we took our bikes over 3
years ago the charge to get them from Arkansas to Providence was $80.00
eachSATA didn't charge us anything extrajust took them as checked
baggage although they would have made us pay a tax on them except we showed
them they were not new so they let them in with no tax. I like flying SATA very
much especially out of Providencethe inter island flights are
iffyone year they had so much cargo on the plane from Sao Miguel to Pico
that they didn't put all of the passenger luggage on the plane! It was
delivered to the adega the next day(that was the time that at the last
minute they told me my carry on was too big so I quickly checked it without
thinking about the fact that I had about 1200.00 euros cash in it! Every penny
was there when it came the next day along with all my jewelry and other stuff
that I carry on in US flights! One interesting thing about the inter island
flights is the no reserved seating.people practically rush the gate to get
the seats they want although they do allow children and elderly priority.
Best regards,
Nancy Date: Sat, 7 Feb 2009 19:11:27 -0800 Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] SATA
Baggage Allowances From: bellema...@gmail.com To: Azores@googlegroups.com
Anyone have any problems with their weight allowances on SATA? I checked the
SATA site and it looks like 6 kg in hand baggage (13.22 lbs) and 20 kilos
checked (44.09 lbs.) I have no problems with these as Ryanair only allows
33.06 lbs checked and I really don't like to carry but one suitcase (carryon
size which I will check) and one small backpack (carryon), but SATA has the
lowest hand baggage allowance. We usually have the hotels do our laundry when
needed so we don't pack so much. I have been on all the other airlines we are
using, British Airways, BMI, Ryanair but first time with SATA. Thanks.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: The book, AZores, Nine Islands, One History

Hi Celeste,

All I have to say is DITTO!

On Feb 9, 6:37 pm, celeste perry ccgran...@yahoo.com wrote:
While cleaning out my email file folders, I thought that maybe the book I
have been trying to read might have some answers to an email from Mel dated
 2004.

In her email, Mel asked about the quality of life her ancestors would have
 had.

The book, by Susana Goulart Costa, Azores Nine Islands, One History, does not
answer this question or questions about ancestors in general. What the book
 does do is give the reader a look at how the Islands were settled; governed;
the wars that were fought and the politics. There is great detail about all
of this and it has taken me quite awhile to dig through the first 90 pages!
So many things influenced the lives of those living in the Azores.

I think that the reader can begin to understand what motivated the common
folk that were living in the Azores to do the things they did. I was of the
opinion that many left the Islands because there was too many people and not
enough food. I know there were various other reasons. Thus far, the book has
given me a lot of food for thought about how the politics at different times
played a part as to how people lived and why some left. I don’t get the
feeling that if you worked hard enough you could change your life.

Maybe it is just seeing what has happened here in the US that makes me think
a young person might entertain the notion that living somewhere else might be
the way to go. Older people that have lost their retirement might also be
 thinking the same thing.

My daughter moved to Australia (from California). She has been able to
purchase a home, has always had work. She did not see how she could
purchase a home in California and figured if she was going to move far
enough away that she'd need to get on a plane to come home she might
as well go to Australia. At least they speak English.

She is very happy there. (She is in Queensland, not Victoria where the
devastating fires are.)

I can see why our ancestors moved if the opportunity arose.
