[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: First Names
Dear Char, No, it's not a typo error. I've seen the name (usually spelled Felizberto ) and a feminine version ending in a instead of o.? I remember them in records from Faial? and Pico. Arline Silveira in Grover Beach, CA I received a letter from a Church today, and it gives the first name of an ancestor's father as something that I have never heard before. The name is Flizberto. Is this a typo error? Anyone else heard or seen this name? It was Ramos as a last name. Char --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores-unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. Yes, Char. It is a first name in pt and not too unusual. [AZORES-Genealogy] Names/Paleography etc.
Dear Fellow Listers Seeing the questions on first/last names reminded me that the Portuguese Paleography booklet is online on Kathy Cardoza's Website: www.homepage.mac.com/kmacardoza/Genealogy/azoresindex.html For those of you just starting out you need to download the Genealogical Word List and don't forget the Paleography! The Paleography booklet has much more than just handwriting samples; there are 4 or 5 examples of each letter of the alphabet and also documents to translate along with a very important list of GIVEN names and also SURNAMES of the Azores, Madeira and Portugal. If you are serious about learning to read the Portuguese records you need these two documents and also a good Portuguese/English Dictionary. I purchases mine several years ago at Furtado's Imports in San Jose California. I have two, Port/Eng and Eng/Port and they were $50 each at the time but well worth the cost. The Paleography booklet also gives some of the abbreviations that are used along with the most common Latin phrases used in the Church Records. Hope this helps out the newbies. Jones, There's a book with the marriages for all of Flores. I don't have Flores ancestry, but there are others on this list that do and own the book. Someone might be able to do a look up for you. Once you know the freguesia, you can order the film and start researching your ancestry. On Faial, you don't have the village do you? [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: de or da
de means of. da is a contraction for of the is is used with feminine words. do is a contraction of of the and is used with masculine words. These are literal translations, so it doesn't always make sense with surnames. They are just prefixes. -- Cheri Mello Listowner, Azores-Gen Researching: Vila Franca, Ponta Garca, Ribeira Quente, R. das Tainhas, Achada --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores-unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Vila Franca do Campo visit
Marcia, What surname are you searching? My father was from Vila Franca, and I still have relatives there. There is a park next to S. Miguel church, maybe you'll find some old folks there! Maria Natalia On Apr 11, 6:25 am, Marcia marciaran...@gmail.com wrote: Thanks very much, Cheri. You will have to hunt for her looking at every baby born with her first name, checking to see if the parents are the right ones. However, a few of the books do have an index in the back, so I'd look back there first to see if an index exists. I'd continue back in time, collecting all the siblings until I go for a few years with no children. If the records state that all the babies were legitimate, I'd go to the marriage book and start look for the parents marriage, beginning with the day before the first born's birth. The marriages will be easier to search, as they will list the bride and groom in the margin or at the top (for that time period). I think SMA was filmed to about 1883, so I'd trace the records back to at least then. That way, when you get home, you can order the film and continue searching back in time. I'd go to the praca (town square) and find an old timer and ask him if he recognizes the photo. He may have you ask someone else. I've had people able to identify my relatives that way. Also, at the festa there will be many people to ask too, so that would be a good idea.
