Could you please reprint the contact name and email address for the
Archives in Ponta Delgada. I am trying to locate a marriage

2009-05-21 Thread Judi Phillips

Cheri,

Thanks for the response. I was unable to open the page, but I did find a link
thru the Angra Herosima page. The email for Ponta Delgada archives is
bpar.pdelgada.i...@azores.gov.pt.

At least that is the link that came up. I hope it works.

[AZORES-Genealogy] CCA Update: Terceira Marriages

2009-05-21 Thread Cheri Mello
I just noticed this for Terceira today:
Marriages:
Santa Barbara: Some early ones, beginning 1560
Cinco Ribeiras: Later ones, beginning 1879
Sao Bartolomeu: Some early ones, beginning 1606

It LOOKS like Corvo, Flores, and Sao Jorge islands are complete, but I don't
research there, so I'm not 100% certain.

The CCA site can be found here (it's a good one to bookmark):
http://pg.azores.gov.pt/drac/cca/ig/
Use Internet Explorer or Safari (the other browsers don't work).
Click on Registos Paroquias on the right
Pick your council (except for Terceira...just click "Indices")

Cheri

The indexes for the Terceira marriages have been up for a few weeks. Sao Jorge
is not quite finished, still have the city of Velas and then I think it's done!
Hopefully Terceira will be next.

2009-05-21 Thread Cheri Mello
I saw no indices today though, but the marriages for 3 villages listed. I
don't check regularly (since my island is not up yet), but I did notice it
was different than last time I looked. But you guys who look all the time
know more than I do.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Ancestry

2009-05-21 Thread Lorraine Thomas
I am new to the group. I have researching my ancestry for about 6 weeks now
and found out alot of information. However, on the Portuguese side of my
family tree, I am at a standstill. What I know, My grandfather's name was
Frank Manuel Rose Marshall born 7-25-1877 in the Azores. He died February 27,
1962 in San Jose, California. He imigrated to the US in 1900. He married Mary
Frietas, born 3-25-1883 in the Azores. Mary had 10 children, 8 living children
that were born in the US. They lived in New Bedford, Mass. from 1900-1910 and
moved to Irvington, California, Alameda County. I beleive they were married
before they came to the US, since Mary's name was Marshall on the Census of
1900. I did find a Naturalization Paper for Frank Joseph Marshall issued on
11-24-1898 in Fayal. He was accompanied by his son Manuel Marshall. The paper
said that Frank was born in Pico 1-6-1843. He sailed on the St. George from
Fayal 3-1880 and resided in Alameda County until 1887. The paper was signed
Francisco Jose Marshall (prehaps) Machado. This could be my great grandfather.
Can anyone in the group help me confirm the island my grandfather and
grandmother came from? Also, can anyone confirm if Francisco Jose Marshall was
Manuel's, father? In addition, who were my grandmothers parents?

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Ancestry

2009-05-21 Thread Cheri Mello
Lorraine,

Six weeks isn't very long. You may want to bookmark this site from the
Azores Genweb on how to research your Portuguese genealogy:
http://homepage.mac.com/kmacardoza/Genealogy/HowTo.html

Frank Manuel Rose Marshall may be Francisco Manuel da Rosa Machado. You
will need to find his village in order to research further. Knowing only
the Azores would be like someone from Europe contacting someone in North
America stating that they know only that their ancestor is from America or
Canada.

Mary Frietas may be Maria Freitas over there. Again, you'll need her
village in order to research further. Mary's name may be Marshall on the
census because that is just what she used. Portuguese naming traditions are
initially confusing. You need to acertain if all children were born in
America or if some were born in the Azores.

You think that Frank Joseph Marshall (Francisco Jose Machado) is the father
to one your grandparents above? He couldn't have naturalized in Faial, as
there are no American courts there to naturalize citizens. Why do you think
he's related?

You'll probably have to go about about 200 years to connect to other
researchers. However, many people have some pretty extensive databases, so
once you do some of the things listed on the Azores Genweb, post your new
findings. The most important thing is to find your village (freguesia).
